Hello there. Although would be about a year out, I would like to start planning now to be prepared. My girlfriend (soon to be fiancé) are looking to camp on the beach for a couple of days. Here cousins had done this trip before in their Jeep, which is where we got the idea. Our goal is to wake up on the beach with sun rise and ocean waves crashing. Fish all day, collect sea shells, beach campfire, and adult beverages.

Anybody do a similar type trip? Where did you stay? What were the conditions like? Any recommendations?

We went for the first time last year and took the ferry from Morris Marina in Atlantic, NC. Basically, all you need to know is that you need everything you would normally camp with. At least as of last year there is nothing available to purchase on the island. If you run out of something the Ferry might be able to bring it to you. We went the last day of Sept through the first few days of October. The weather was horrible but it was just bad luck. The day we left was BEAUTIFUL.

Depending on when you want to go, you need to book your ferry slot well in advance. They fill up quickly.

What area are you talking about specifically? The outer banks generally refers to corova south to ocracoke. Where camping on the beach is not allowed but can easily be worked around. I “camp” on Avon beaches every October and November for about 3-4 days at a time. The key is to have a self contained unit, no ground tents or rtt’s. If that’s what you want, you’ll have to go further south. Portsmouth island would be my first recommendation, only accessible by boat or ferry. There’s no permanent residents and there are miles and miles of beach to chose for a camp site.

anyway, corova to ocracoke.. muggy summers, would most definitely not recommend July or august for no ac at night. Fall is beautiful though, but we do tend to get more storms in the latter months. I have a soft topper with a bed platform I use and I stay pretty content up until the first/second week of November. The fishing is phenomenal and the she shell/glass hunting is excellent in the fall time as well.
