Hey all, I am currently living in Okinawa Japan and will be returning stateside in a few months. I am considering buying an early 90s JDM Land Cruiser (Prado, 80 series, or similar) with the intent to sell when I inevitably get stationed overseas again. I am curious what the market looks like for something like this? I can get one out here for around $20k and it will be free to ship. But I don't want to get one if I won't be able to sell it (ideally for a profit). Thanks for the help!

Here are a couple examples of what I am looking to get:

You'd have it shipped to the states to sell here? It says Land Cruiser on the side, it's right-hand drive, it's vintage, cool, and unique. I am far from an expert but I bet you'd have zero problems selling it. Reach out to Brian Corsetti, he will know for sure. I think he's a good dude and he'd be willing to help you know for sure.

Personally, I like the mid wheelbase 70-series (73 or 74) with I6 or V8 (Otto or diesel) and a manual transmission. Absolutely no 2LT.

80- and 90-series are probably easier in terms of parts availability since these were sold by Toyota. The ultimate is one with the turbo diesel V8 and a manual transmission.

I also like short wheelbase Nissan Safari-Patrol, Daihatsu Rocky-Fourtrak-Taft (F73 is ok, prefer F78) and Mitsubishi Pajero (V25). Currently I have a wide body SWB '94 Pajero V6.

IH8MUD is a great Land Cruiser resource if you're not familiar yet.

Built out 75 Series Troopys go for $30-$50k. There was a 1HD-T equipped 81 series triple locked on Land Cruisers direct for around $60k. The market is booming right now.

I'd be interested in either of those if the price is right. The 78 Series/Prado you have pictured aren't as highly prized IMHO mainly cause they are lighter duty and powered by 4cyl Toyota diesels that are not that awesome. The 1VD v8 Turbo diesel is not available for importing under the 25 year rule until 2032 as it started production in 2007 LC's.

the market is good, buuuuuut not only do you need to import it, but you need to go through the process and get it titled/registered ect in the states,,, buyers are paying for imported AND registered rigs.

sell a rig with a USA title reg, yeah, 30k and up should be easy if its in good shape, no title/reg, you MIGHT break even.
