Brand New 2019 TRD Pro Sport with Toyota Safety Sense. As is tradition, I swapped out my factory chicken wire grill for the Black TRD Pro Grill with Garnish Sensor Cover. Everything seemed fine at first, but now my Pre-Collision System will auto disengage and recommend that I clean the sensor cover. No matter what I do, I still have the same problem -- Turn truck on, no issues, drive 5-20min and then Pre-Collision System shuts off with no way to turn it back on.

I purchased both items from MadHornets.com, and as some aftermarket parts don't fit EXACTLY right, I had to glue the sensor cover to the grill at the contact points, as the clips didn't lock in place quite right and the package was missing the lock washers (click here to see what I'm talking about https://i.imgur.com/vRei6KJ.jpg)

Has anyone else had this problem? I've seen some posts about having sensor issues but nothing that explains what to do when having issues with the TSS. This problem seems to only be affecting the Pre-Collision System, and the lane departure works just fine. I haven't used my Dynamic Cruise Control yet, but I imagine this could affect that as well. Can a Toyota dealership simply calibrate my sensor to fix it? If so, is it an easy fix and roughly how much would it cost? I'd rather not return the TRD Grill and Garnish Sensor Cover, but if this issue is common and/or not fixable with after market Garnish Sensor Covers, I'd rather just return everything and shop elsewhere.

I m new here but it could be as simple as the plastic that the sensor reads thru may be thicker and attenuates the radar signal?
Then as the sensor detects this attenuation and asks for the sensor to be cleaned. I work for automotive radar company and this is a very challenging issue for OEM's the radar censor placement and the media it needs to see thru. Or could be something more complicated. If you can thin out that portion in front of the censor it may work. Another way to prove this concept is to "if you can" place the censor outside in front of the bumper unobstructed and see if that helps if you still get the error it could need re calibration. OEM thing done at the factory and auto body repair shops after a collision when they are replaced.

Let s know how it goes...
    Good Luck

Not sure the dealer will bother since it’s not an OEM grill.

I'm having the same issue; and my local shop just called to tell me they will NOT touch it due to liability issues.
Everyone is covering their @ss, and Toyota simply doesn't seem to care. Their canned response is tell me to put the factory grille back on.
There has GOT to be an answer somewhere; I will keep looking and let you know if I find anything.

Remove the sensor cover and see if the issue goes away. If it does go away then the cover you have is causing the issue and you will just need to get a new one. There have also been people who have shimmed the sensor with washers and it fixes the issue.

So there are a few options you can take.

This model (pure chineseium) doesn't have a "cover", I can see the sensor through the grille.
I'll give the shims a shot, tho...
    Thank you, Sir.

I put an aftermarket TRD Pro grill on mine and did not use the sensor cover. It barked at me for a few days but then settled down and, supposedly, adjusted itself to it's new location (slightly higher on the Pro grill). I only get errors in very heavy rains, and even then it's not that often. Everything still works otherwise.

Add a couple washers to the top sensor screw. Keep adding a washer until the problem resolves itself. Mine took three. No issues since.

does the center where the sensor mount come off or is it solid? 2017 trd pro grills didnt have the sensor, so they didnt come off on some cheap versions, but 2018+ pros had the sensor so most cheap grills designed for 2018+ have a little part that comes out that can be swapped with the garnish. If that part does come off, try running without it. The thickness of the part may be whats causing the errors.

I get those same errors in the rain too. I assume its just water build up between the sensor and the cover.

Why would Toyota care that some aftermarket or otherwise not compatible grill causes issues with their safety sensor system? They made it and it worked, you changed it and now it doesn't work and you want them to tell you how to fix it, so they did, and you don't accept the solution.

What the fuck is wrong with some people in here?

Use washers as spacers to tilt the sensor? That seems to be the hack for all the Chinese pro grills.

I was checking it out; and I did discover that the cover over the sensor DOES come off... I have removed it, I will clean it and also clean up some of the manufacturing issues.
Probably thin it out a bit as well... TBD. (btw: I "ignored" those other two @sshats with the negative commentary... They had nothing to offer in way of useful info, so I just ignore/block them and move on. **chuckle)

I will also drive it around a bit without the cover, see if I can get the unit to "learn"... as well as trying the washers as Philth suggested.
At the end of the day, it's a radar head. I work on these things all the time, so there has got to be an easy solution.

    Thanks, Guys.
