I did a search on here and on google. I cant find an answer. The 4 runner now comes standard with led lights. The led light assembly appear to be a projector type lens like on the halogen taco lights. My wifes 21 camry has led's like the 4runner as far as the projector lens type. My question is could I buy 4runner OEM led bulbs and put them in my taco? Would it be plug and play or would I need to do some type of modification? I know I could buy aftermarket bulbs but I kind of like the idea of using OEM toyota led bulbs if all I have to do is replace the bulb.

Unless you have OEM LED headlights on your Tacoma, do not install LEDs in your halogen headlight assemblies.

I don’t think you put much thought into the OP’s actual question, you just kind of dove into being the LED police. LED lights are blinding to opposite traffic whether in halogen housings or not, let it go.

Halogen bulbs are pinpoint lights and the reflector housings are designed to work with that to aim the beams, thus avoiding blinding oncoming traffic.
LED's are huge by comparison and require a different internal design to be aimed properly.
Ask yourself, do you want to be in the oncoming path of a blinded driver?

I think @eurowner answered the OPs question adequately. Your response on the other hand is incorrect.
“LED lights are blinding to opposite traffic whether in halogen housings or not.” If the LED headlights are in housings made for LEDs then they will not be blinding to oncoming traffic if properly aimed.
Now to help the OP, I’m not familiar with the new 4 Runner LED lights, but I’m assuming they are enclosed housings like most proper LED headlights are, i.e. the Tacoma LED OEM headlights. There aren’t replaceable LED bulbs. Since the lifespan of the LEDs are expected to be longer than the vehicle, they don’t need to be replaceable. So there wouldn’t be an LED bulb to use in your Tacoma, you’d have to install the entire headlight housing. At that point you’d be better off just using the OEM Tacoma LED headlights.

Well you will want to squint your eyes as you drive by me then. My not cheap Precision LED fogs went right into the halogen housings. I’ve been flashed a couple times in the last year by oncoming traffic letting me know it’s too bright for them, but they also saved me from a deer strike and skunk strike on the heavily wooded roads I travel on frequently. Judging by the lighting I see coming at me from oncoming traffic, my set up is no more offensive than theirs.

I read t through the information posted on this thread and it’s very informative. I’ll be reviewing my headlight/fog light combo in my truck. What’s annoying is the various forum police that pop up on these threads with heavy handed opinions. In this case I think the OP asked a question about whether the 4Runner LED bulbs could work in his Taco without blinding people and right away the police jump in to condemn the question without really answering it.

This video was why I asked the question if i could just change the bulb This video compares the 21 and 20 4-runner lights. The head lights look identical but one is led and the other is halogen. Not sure if toyota just changed the bulbs or redesigned the back of the housing to make the led's work. Fast forward to the 7 minute mark and you can see that the low beam is a projector style lens on both 4runner models just like the tacoma halogen light assembly. Without knowing the differences between the two 4runner examples, one would think that maybe all toyota did was change the bulbs since they look the same and toyota didnt make a completely different style headlight assembly for the led light like they did for the tacoma.

I don't think you can just rip out the LED "bulb" from the 4runner and drop it into Tacoma. Usually OEM LEDs are the whole assembly itself, if it is a projector, then the LED is an actual component of the projector assembly and is not meant to be separated. They are not h4, h7, h9 style LED bulbs.

OP, I'll add to this. Generally any LED bulbs that plug in like regular halogens are aftermarket. This is because LEDs placed in halogen housings are illegal for on road use. Thus, the ones you see from the factory are generally purpose built LED housings and the bulbs are usually not a "plug and play" style bulb.
