I haven't had to turn the lathe on since the bushing incident. We've had mostly welding/bolt in breakages.

How does Mom feel about the plan??

I can only say this My mom hated the idea of a nursing home but my big shot brother decided it was for the best it was because she could no longer handle steps and the bathroom was up stairs and living alone . He Did not want to hear about a bathroom down stairs .

She lasted 6 weeks and was gone.

You ever deal with volumetric flasks, say from VWR? They are "made from ASTM E438 Type 1 Class A Borosilicate 33 expansion glass as per ASTM specification E237 and E288." (that's straight from VWR's website). I'm curious how hot I could heat them. I know they are calibrated for volume at 20C, but if you're using an oven to help dissolve a solid, how high could you go and not mess up the flask, 150C-200C?

That's funny, we make parts for VWR when they need Quartz products.

I'm not that familiar with grades of borosilicate glass, but the Boro we sometimes use which is just a standard material can tolerate being annealed at 565°C without distorting. I wish I could tell you for certain, but I would be amazed if there's a material that can't safely be heated to 200-300° C.

Edit: from what I understand, those ratings have more to do with the expansion rate of the material than its maximum safe temperature exposure. You can almost certainly heat the flask to the temperature you stated, but as you probably know you can not safely cool it down rapidly (IE throwing a hot flask into water). This is because of it's expansion rate.

I'll take that opportunity to explain also that this is one of the main differences with fused Quartz. It has a much lower expansion rate than borosilicate, so you can actually cool it rapidly without breaking it in most cases.

I don't think my mom has much say in the matter as far as going home or to a nursing home, the Dr will have to release her.
She hasn't had the strength to get up and move about on her own for 3 weeks now.
She's extremely depressed about that and knows what most likely will happen. Nursing home. I don't think she'll make it long there if that happens.

Up and down week here too after the birth of my daughter. Two days later we're in Nemours childrens hospital in Orlando due to dehydration and lack of urine for a few days. Home now, things are steady again. Stressful week to say the least.

Thanks, these are one of my favorite things to make. I get to use small rod and heat it super hot so it flows into the gaps between the paddles and the shaft and to me that's all super fun. Plus it looks cool when it's done.

That sucks, problems when they're that little are extremely stressful. Glad to hear she's doing better now.
