Are Iridium spark plugs worth it?

I’m replacing my spark plugs and i was wondering if getting iridium spark plugs is worth the few extra bucks. I heard some good things about the NGK laser iridium spark plugs.

 

Just get OEM plugs. No need for anything else.

 

Nothing beats OEM. Keep in mind how many miles the OEM have lasted until most here have changed them even with zero issues. Get Densos and be done with it.

 

Iridium plugs are not worth it nor recommended for use on these trucks unless you are boosted.

 

This. OEM Denso standard plugs only.

And the ONLY reason why Iridium are recommended on the boosted trucks is, unless you get VERY crafty with the perfect socket, extensions etc, the driver side plugs require the supercharger to be removed to get to them.

 

Denso K20HRU11. I installed iridiums for a friend against my recommendations and it idled and ran terribly. It may have been his setup but I always recommend copper/nickel for v6

 

Denso for sure. I might also use NGK if for some reason i cant find Denso. But I would definitely check the gap on the NGK.

Or go factory- NGK on one side, Denso on the other. No idea if they're still doing that but mine came that way as did a lot of others from what I've read here.

 

Contrary to other opinions, I've been on denso iridium plugs since I bought my truck in 2014. Changed them at 90k miles because I decided I'd replace my coils. No issues with them at all. Get the correct heat range and they will be fine. Anyone who gets the wrong heat range will have issues. People say to use the cheaper plugs and that's fine, but I skip replacing them at 30k/60k intervals, so I save lots of time, labor, and I come out ahead by not having to spend on new plugs for those intervals.

If you're lazy (like me) and don't want to change plugs every 30k, get iridium plugs. I ran Denso Iridium Long Life 3421 with no issues. That was before TT plugs that @Revelations linked came to market.

 

Also, iridiums are pre-gapped, but always check with a tool in case something got missed.

 

How much is your time worth? How much do you like dicking around under the hood? If your time is worth anything at all and you have better things to do, get the iridium plugs.

I'm pushing 80K on my iridium plugs. I checked them at 30K and for all intents and purposes they were still new. I'll check again when they hit 100K. Bottom line iridium plugs last longer because of a tiny little piece of iridium. Other than that they are identical to the "regular" plugs.

 

I changed out to Irridium a few years and over 30k miles ago. If I remember correctly, they were only a couple of dollars more per plug. Plug change was a pain in the rear for my 6 cyl, so the minimal cost which was fine with me. Even if they don't last 100k, I am ok with the cost/benefit ratio to save doing the plugs more often

 

I went Irridium because I didn't want to have to replace plugs as often either. Has been 100% fine/normal. But I recently learned that there are a lot of fake Irridiam plugs being made/sold. I would assume that most of the people who have had bad experiences with Irridium plugs probably had the fake/non authentic ones.

Go iridiums to avoid changing the plugs often? I think my OEM almost hit 90k before I swapped them, not knowing if the PO replaced them. Ill go another 90k before the next interval. That's how much I believe in the cheap Densos.

Iridium are fantastic. However I've heard some guys have issues with them in the 2nd gens and I don't remember why. Best to stick with OEM.

 

I think its because there are a lot of fake/counterfeit Iridium plugs being sold which would be a pretty good reason for having issues!
