You must not have been paying attention this last year. Not all teachers are terrible, but many of them are and the schools and teachers unions are protecting them more than the kids they're supposed to be teaching. Several have even tried to block and/or ban parents from watching their children's online classes. In other words they don't want YOU to know what they're teaching YOUR kids...

They had their place and time, but yes in today's world unions are more often bad than good.

That’s the person. That’s the problem with any organization without adequate oversight.

Lots of unions hold their members accountable, guarantee their skills, and as a result the members are better employed. CWA in the Midwest is outstanding - if they certify a resume, that member has the skill. They also provide training opportunities for their members to expand their skill sets.

Letting kids go to various schools doesn't alleviate the shortage of effective personnel - any kid wants to work if there's programming offered by effective personnel - it may be customized in many ways, but that's the essential part of a teacher having the experience and skill to be effective. They tried that in Long Beach CA - it sounded good at first, but wasn't practical. Please know I agree we would benefit from a better system though.

Teachers don't matter anymore. School doesn't matter anymore. Basic learning (math, reading, writing) is slowly being phased out in favor of a dumb and dependent future.

I will agree that testing only collects data on how a person interacts with a test and this often won't provide the most useful assessment of their knowledge and skills.

Couple things - most of the people in my teaching program couldn’t expand math into more than computation.

I’m more concerned about how teachers usually don’t know how to differentiate materials to help students who, due to a plethora of circumstances need support to get them to where they need to be so that they don’t continually fall further behind. Tests won’t help this outright. Testing isn’t problematic - it’s just how we choose to interpret and react to the results. It’s good you guys discuss education though. It usually is overlooked by people that would normally be logical and sense what would actually contribute to its improvement.

Some states essentially are. Is it Washington that got rid of math because it's racist? Yeah, that's gonna help society.
