I've used search and have found the towing thread before but can't find it again. So firstly if someone could link that for me I'd appreciate it.

Now for the opinion seeking part...

I have a 2005 6 speed manual v6 Tacoma and I am trying to pull a 2700lb (dry weight) camper. This one specifically
    https://www.rvusa.com/rv-guide/2012-gulf-stream-ameri-lite-travel-trailer-floorplan-19rbc-tr5173

Through pain staking process I've found out it did not come with a tow package. How much of a pain is it going to be to install a 7 pin connector and a brake controller? Will it be worth the time and money? all towing will be above 5000 ft elevation.

    Thanks for any input.

Not sure about the brake controller wiring, I’ll let someone else try to chime in on that one. But also be aware that pulling that way you also have to stop that weight so good brakes or a big brake kit would be advised and also when towing a pulling watch your transmission temp as I don’t think your truck came with a transmission oil cooler as it does not have a tow package
Definitely make sure you didn’t come on a tow package well the hitch receiver is not there but we are oil filter goes there should be two hoses coming out from underneath that going to an oil cooler

Don’t worry about an oil cooler, manuals can’t and don’t use them. Brake controllers, really depends on your electrical savvy. Most have reasonable instructions to follow, if you understand the basics.

Installing a 7 pin isn’t that difficult but is a pita if you aren’t experienced in doing that. You may just want to have some place install it for you.
There’s a lot more to a tow package than just a 7 pin connector. A couple include oil cooler, larger alternator, larger battery (27 series) and more.
Without a tow package your max tow weight is about 3500lbs. By the time you get your trailer loaded up you will probably exceed your tow max capacity. Towing over limit can create some problems if you cause a serious accident. You would be considered a negligent driver and may increase your liability.

I think Tow Package just comes with:
    -rear pin connector
    -additional trans cooler if automatic
    -rear hitch

does not come with a trailer brake controller like a Chevy Silverado.
But has the connector under kick panel to install one.
I picked up a Tekonsha P3 but have not installed yet, currently trying to figure out how to mount it.
If I should cut out the left drop down cubby to slide it in (I otherwise don't use that spot)
    or stick it somewhere
I think my knee won't hit the center under steering wheel so that might work
Was gonna avoid truck damage by using double sided velcro tape
but I hear that melts off in heat and that using screws + bracket is better

One guy mounted his in a spot where his knee accidentally hit it, breaking off the manual adjustment lever and basically destroying the $100+ unit

More weight + more axles + surge brakes = trailer brake controller to activate them
How needed that is, or how well surge brakes help/react I don't know.
What's worse is that the stock Taco brakes (at least in front) suck.
Gonna be interesting having 6k+ lbs of weight in total with front calipers/rotors smaller than some 3k lb passenger cars.
There's tow-capable SUV's (body on frame truck is supposed to be even more capable) that run even bigger brakes stock.

The package includes what you said plus oil cooler, 130 amp alternator, and heavy duty 27 series battery.

I'm a confident electrician especially 12v systems. Just wasn't sure about the brake controllers, I've seen some things that say they need to be mounted level and there might be a spot to plug into, clear as mud kind of information. I also really don't see how any of those additions in the stock "towing package" nearly double the capacity. I just want to get the brake controller in and add what seems necessary from there; air bags, alternator, maybe a second battery in parallel.

I'll definitely check this out, thanks for the link. I've been driving MT and towing for 20 years but never towing with a MT.
