I know this is an odd question but I am looking for a way to child proof my e-brake handle. Was looking for some sort of cap I could put over the button. I have an irrational fear of one of my kids getting in my truck and letting the e brake down and playing with the stick. Why? Because I was this dumb kid in my dads truck when I was very young. Luckily I hit a tree before I could build up any speed.

    Edit:

After googling with bunch of keywords I've come up with an idea. I am going to try and get a longer e brake release button then drill a hole in that I can pin to keep the button from being pressed.

    Something like this.

Lock your truck .. best option and tell your kids vehicles are not playgrounds . Recent news of a kid that lost their life playing in a vehicle when the window rolled up on them .

maybe educate your kids about it and show them what could happen (minus hitting the tree or gaining speed)?

    chock the tires?

custom made leather grip that says "WTF are you doing you little shit?" (that's a joke)

Why would a kid be in the truck without a parent?
It's easy to rig a cap. It's hard to lock it.

I am in agreement just thinking worst case scenario here. God forbid anything were to happen to my truck.

If you're truly worried about it, wheel chocks is the way to go. Bonus is if you live in a cold climate you can forgo the parking brake if the cable or drums like to freeze up.

There are some good suggestions here. I hope you find a solution you feel at peace with. I often times think worst case scenario, but just remember it rarely ever happens. Being prepared for it is not a bad plan, just don’t lose sleep over it. Have a good day!

I have seen different neighbors have kids "drive" twice. One hit my mailbox and the other crashed both of his parents cars together to the tune of $10,000. It happens. Don't expect the insurance to pay.

Don't let kids near your vehicle unattended!!

Pull the handle up another notch so that the tension is too high for small hands to push the button. And chock the wheels to be extra safe.

Sarcasm is dead. Good point on the tension don't have the truck yet will test that. Recall my FJ being very easy to release.

It wasn't sarcasm. When I was 5, my parents owned a great Dane my dad pulled up and parked, left the engine running. The dog and I were in the back seat and the dog jumped into the front seat and hit the gear shift. The car (74 monte carlo) lurched into reverse and took out a bbq pit. Try explaining that to an insurance company.

But i still vote to educate them and then trust them. And if something happens don't lose your shit, turn it into a teachable moment.

    Good luck.

[Edit] god i hate making serious posts... gross, i have to go take a shower

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
Yet another bonus.. If you chock the wheels, you can use a remote starter on a manual.

+1 for vehicles are not a playground... But maybe place a wedge below the lever, so it can't be dropped without the extra effort of removing the block.

    All excellent points.
You are being a "helicopter parent" you know. Kids will be kids. Sometimes they learn best by their mistakes.
If you vehicle is parked in such a way that releasing the e-brake will allow it to roll, then #4 & #5.

I was in an old work truck and kicked the stick shit into neutral and off I went. I'm really not concerned about insurance or damage to the truck. My five year old has figured out that if she takes the key close to my wifes car she can open the doors. Luckily I don't have to worry about that with the Tacoma but we've since put our key hanger above the garage door.
