@urshur do you have a CDH? If so, how did you install it? I have a Lavanar 2kw and going to build it as a portable and run the heater hose up through a cubby. Wondering how you have yours set up. Mahalo!

I got a used Espar D2 out of a semi from some guy on FB marketplace. Same difference though. I originally had mine installed in a Hoffman electrical enclosure, with the idea that it would be modular and relatively easy to take out of the truck when I'm not using it. I installed one of these in the bed cubby to facilitate being able to route the exhaust outside, while still being able to take the entire contraption out pretty easily. On the outside, I have a longer exhaust hose running from that port to down around my actual engine exhaust, so that fumes don't accumulate in the wheel well.

Right now I'm working on designing a new system (e.g a bigger box) out of 80/20 to mount the heater to instead. I don't love the box I made, particularly with the angle that the exhaust comes out of it. Makes for a pretty sketchy connection to that exhaust port.

Great info! This was one of my options. Thank you. So you had your heater inside your bed and X1 and just routed the exhaust out the cubby and thru the hull connection. Have you thought about leaving it outside to run and running the heat pipe into the bed through a cubby? I'm looking at ways to 1) be modular, 2) keep noise down, and 3) keep diesel fumes/smell out of the X1.

I did think about leaving it outside. But I couldn't come up with a way to do it that I was a big fan of. If you have it on the ground, your output hose would be so long that the heater efficiency would plummet. You'd have to figure out a way to insulate the hell out of that hose, or else you'll be losing a ton of heat due to the ambient temp outside. Or you could build some sort of platform to keep the heater up by the tent to minimize the hose length, but that just starts to be a lot of stuff to fiddle with outside.

In my (limited) experience, if you're careful with your connections, and make sure that the exhaust is really tight, you don't get any diesel fumes/smell in the X1 at all. That's the beauty of a sealed system with internal combustion like a diesel heater. I've been using kerosene in mine so far, which also helps keep the smell down. It hasn't been that noisy either, although I can't say how it'd compare to a different make/model. The Espar is pretty quiet, which is one of the reasons I shelled out quite a bit more money for it.

I've settled on it being modular insofar as much as you can take it out of truck between trips pretty easily, but not necessarily intra-trip. So I install it at home before leaving, and it stays in place until I get home. It should be out of the way enough that it doesn't affect my ability to get to any of my other gear though.

Thanks again. Excellent point on the decrease in efficiency on the heater hose; didn't necessarily completely think about that one. I plan on using a large Rigid tool box and see how it all fits. So like yours, it's removable, but also try to limit space it takes up. I'll need to down size the fuel tank to 5.5L to fit into the box. Work in progress.

from my experience, the most annoying part is the clicking of the fuel pump, but lots of people have figured out how to insulate them, etc to reduce that.

The fuel pump on mine is pretty loud, although it helped to use a rubber bushing on the mounting to the box. When mine was in a sealed NEMA 4 steel box, that helped a lot too. I'm sure it'll be louder when it's just in an 80/20 space frame. I usually sleep with earplugs in when I'm camping anyways though, so it's not that big of a deal to me. At least not as big of a deal as freezing my ass off when it's time to get up and the air is 20 deg outside.

i own a Chinese diesel heater which ive put in a harbor freight wannabe pelican case and sadly have had ALL of the issues, im currently dealing with an error 10 code which was initially and error six which was initially and error 4, so after replacing the cracked glow plug things worked, sadly i was dumb and melted my lines with the heat when testing because i forgot to stick the hot air hose on. so i then replaced the fuel pump. worked fine and now ive got error 10. idk what the hell is going on, but ill say this. its driving me up a wall! haha

If you ever get completely fed up with it, I'd highly recommend trying to find a decent used Webasto or Espar. They're expensive, but you do tend to get what you pay for. Especially with things that involve combustion and the production of noxious fumes.

Seems like the season where we are all considering heat options.
I was out this weekend, 20deg overnight at 6k elevation, and spent a bunch of time thinking about less bedding, more heating.

Been considering an outdoor style build for safety and noise, and mounting up over cab in front of the X1.

Went down the youtube rabbit hole yesterday, and looking at this kit:
    https://smile.amazon.com/Bestauto-Parking-Muffler-Control-Motor-home/dp/B083PPZQLD

Maybe you guys could hurry up and make all the mistakes, so I can learn from them?

I'm hoping to have my fireplace installed in the next 3 weeks :)

I've played with both chinese and name-brand heaters. The name brands are always a better unit, better support, and usually there are local people that work on them as they're used in semi cabs very frequently - and you don't have to spend hours reading facebook groups to figure out why it wont work.

They're usually 3x the price though....

Or get a heated blanket and a good sleeping bag ha!

It would likely be near the vagabond length. The GFC is shorter.

I was looking into the Sherpa but ended up cutting my Prinsu. Would not have saved much money in the long run.

I think I might go with this. I emailed Sherpa and they think option B would be a good fit. They also stated,
“If you would like to take measurements as well, the measurements listed on the website are taken as though it were a box and measured from the tip of the windshield at the gutter.”

I have the Lavanar Pro 2kw CDH. It gets a lot of very high marks for being a solid unit. As with ALL CDHs, they have to be setup correctly. Go check out John Mck (or Mack) videos on YouTube. He does a great job explaining everything about CDHs.
