Colorado Pontoon Boat … fit?

I’m thinking of getting a Colorado Pontoon Boat and wonder how well it will fit in the bed of my Tacoma? The boat is listed as 56” wide and my Tacoma measures slightly larger than that. But I’ll bet there are some people on here that own that same boat.

Your bed measures more than that between the wheel wells?

If so, why don't you think it would fit?

72 lbs isn't too bad to move around.

 

I didn’t know what a Colorado pontoon boat was either. Apparently it’s an inflatable pontoon boat with a frame.

I’ve about decided not to get one. Yes, the boat only is 72 lbs but when you add fishing gear and cokes/candy, maybe a trolling motor which needs a 40 lb battery, you wind up with quite a bit of gear to move to the water. But carrying it in the truck bed instead of pulling a trailer would be nice. I think I’ll stick with the float tube.

 

I have the Colorado XTS with 9' pontoons. I have mounted 2, 6' 2x4's using L brackets from HD attached to the lumber bolted up to the bed rails. I got the rail inserts and bolts from Amazon with some nylon washers and bolts from Ace HW.

I remove the pontoons and partially deflate and stuff them in the bed with everything else under netting. I use some Harbor Freight wracheting straps to secure the pontoon frame to the 2x4's. I use a double pumper hand pump to inflate at the lake. Takes about 15 mins or so to get setup.

Way under $100 for the whole setup which is easily installed and removed. I may get a bed extender (hitch mounted) next spring that would allow me to keep the pontoons attatched, I'd still have to use the home-made bed rails. Hope this helps. Lol. I’ve learned about two new things in this thread: Colorado pontoon and float tube. Where are these things popular? I’ve never seen them.

 

First you must like to fish. Then if you have that covered you decide how you want to get to the fish. A boat is preferred by many of course but there are many who prefer other methods. A float tube is propelled by flippers and you are in the water (waders in cold) … then many love kayaks and a Colorado pontoon is a cousin.

 

I’m not much of a fisherman myself, but my grandfather was an avid fisherman, I live in a state full of fisherman, and I own a fishing boat, thus I have a fair amount of exposure. A typical fishing boat in Minnesota is a 16’ aluminum v-haul with a 250hp outboard. I surmise that the fisherman are an impatient lot. Hah!

 

I've fished in big boats, little boats, canoes...float tube rocks for fishing. I fly fish almost exclusively but, anything will work. I stay away from large bodies of water for the most part and the tube is perfect for small mountain lakes. Fits in the truck, too. Toss it in and go fishing!

BTW: I've seen some bad reviews on the Colorado. Try a Buck's Bags or Outcast/Fish Cat product if you want a pontoon.

 

I have also fished out of a canoe in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It’s the only place near me where I imagine seeing a Colorado pontoon. You can’t use the motor in most of the area and in the areas that allow motors I typically see aluminum v-hauls with <25hp outboards (limited by law).

 

That’s what it is? That’s a glorified kayak.

 

Sorry to thread jack, but wow, that brings back memories of one of the best trips I've ever taken! About middle school days, I went with with our church's youth group. It's funny, because all us kids were poopooin' the idea of roughing it for a week, we agreed we would rather go somewhere Cool,,, but we were all glad they made us go in the end.

 

Boy 250hp is way too much for a 16' boat, you must mean 25hp.

 

Nope, I mean 250hp. I might be exaggerating a little bit, but those fancy aluminum fishing boats are usually packing a very big outboard.

I have a 17' aluminum drift boat and I can make my boat stand still opening the throttle all the way on a 9.9 kicker. Half throttle is about all it will take. I have never seen a 250 hp outboard on a 16' boat. Our 21' sled (designed for a motor vs a flat bottom drift boat) took a 150 and that was hauling ass beyond what is safe out in the ocean.

 

Those bass boats are alot longer than 16' try 21'.
