RSI Smart Cap

I already had Matt Gecko LEDs for my bed that I put in a while ago. Once I got my cap I emailed Matt and asked him just for the RSI LED strips, didn't need the rest of the kit. He was happy to sell me just that. I wired in the lights with the bed lights on the same switch and circuit. I had previously replaced the switch with a sealed marine unit since the original one didn't last one new england winter without developing the green crusties.

 

So you were able to just tie in to the Gecko power supply at the back of the bed without running another set of power cables to the battery? I wasn't sure if the original wiring from the Gecko bed lights was able to power both the bed and the RSI lights. If so, I'm ordering an RSI set from Matt.

 

Okay so I scrolled through the whole post. I see some people did Prinsu rack on their RSI cap. My question is, what do I need to mount the rack? So I need trimming or can I just replace some nuts and bolts to make it work?

 

I used m8 square nuts in the rsi tracks (like the ones linked at the bottom of this page) and 16mm length screws to mount the prinsu feet onto my smartcap. I did have to put fender trim on the bottom edge of the prinsu rack because my side doors on the smartcap were slightly hitting the prinsu rack when fully opened.

 

When I installed my Front Runner load bars I thought that one was longer than the other, nope...they are same length (the load bars) but the RSI EVOA I got is a bit narrower towards the rear. I guess it follows the Tacoma bed shape (short box).

 

Anyone have answers to my earlier question?

Did all of you use a torque wrench as instructed or just go by feel? I went by the latter. 9ft/lbs = "go until I have to force it using my whole forearm" 4ft/lbs = "go until I have to force it using just my hand"

 

I just used feel partly because I trust it more ironically. I just went until I hit the first resistance into the pads that sit underneath the plate and turned a few turns in addition and called it good haha

 

I just tightened everything up within reason and kept the gap even around the edge. The key to just keep the gap even so there is equal force around the seal and not bending the edges of the metal. Hard to explain, you just have to know what it feels like. Also, you’ll want to check them after a few hundred miles to retighten any if needed.

 

I went to about 6ft/lbs but I back off a bit if the metal started to bend. I have not had any issues with water intrusion inside the bed.

 

I did it by feel. I tight them down till the crush washer is flat and then half a turn. If it helps there seems to be 10 threads showing from the bottom. Seems to work for me, you dont want to overtightening it because the bed rail bar will bend more if you do that. Same for the cap rail. I also used blue loctite just incase it backed out while driving. Seems to be fine to me and no water intrusion.

 

When you get a chance, can you take some pictures of the mounting portion? I want to see how the rack mounts onto the rail. Also, how long is your 16mm bolt? Can you share the link you got it from? I google 16mm but there are various sizes in length. Thanks in advance!

 

I did mine by feel , used blue locktite for the roof area.

 

Loctite is a good call. Might take them out one by one to apply lol

How do I lube the hinges and make the lock easier to put the key in? I have a hard time putting my keys in my cap now

 

I bought some graphite, coal like fine powder...that's what we apply to locks in hospital I work at. Got mine of Amazon, cheap...just a few puffs and you'll be good a long time. Just don't use graphite in stuff that has electric contacts...like car ignition but best for almost all mechanical type locks.
