I have a poll thread and the info seems to be mainly folks first change after the ToyotaCare services are complete is when they find the cartridge over tightened.

In my experience doing the 5k, 40k, 50k, and 60k oil changes, 5k and 40k were a bit tight and the rest we easy to get off with a standard 3/8in ratchet. It was noted that the procedure in the dealer shops is for the tech to tighten it and for someone to check that. It seems that second step might be problematic.

    I did at the bottom.

    But:

Cast AL tension is about 23,000psi to 32,000psi with an elongation steepness factor of about 10,400,000psi.

35% glass reinforced nylon is about 24,000psi with an elongation steepness factor of about 1,100,000psi. About as strong, but much less brittle. It is about 10x more flexible against loading.

Send me one of each housing and I'll be happy to crush them on the Instron universal tester. It will record compressive values and record the exact failure load

Good point as wall thicknesses, other molded features, and processing will affect the actual load capability. So, my general assumption was the same shape, along with big assumptions on the materials, esp the AL alloy.

Mostly electrical shit that nobody cares about.
You know what I'm amazed by? How unscientific your comment is and how confidently you speak about tensile strength and compressive forces without having conducted an FEA analysis on the oil filter housing, the associated assembly and the engine itself. You know the thing that the oil filter housing spins on to is also made from Aluminum and neither is designed to take any impact whatsoever? Kindly, stop pretending that Toyotas decision to go with a plastic housing vs aluminum was anything short of a cost reduction effort. Evidenced by the fact that they make an OEM aluminum version on certain other vehicles.

Don't hold your breath. You already know that testing the housing independently won't tell you anything useful.

I didn't know I needed a cast aluminum canister until you bastards told me I did. I haven't even put it on yet. And now we know it's inferior to the Nylon canister?

Anyone want a cast aluminum canister? New-in-box?

You also need to consider that thin die cast shapes tend to have very large grain sizes especially thin sections. I would expect it to perform below the generic published properties.

    Hahahaha! Go, TW!

    :spending:

We had a cartridge filter on one other car that didn't even have the helpful flutes on the side. It lasted at least 140k with me doing 10 of the oil changes.

In the end, if you use the torque spec, either will last the life of the Taco.

Fuck you, it isn't a mission to Mars. Put up or shut up, I'll wager $1,000 the FRN will record higher compressive value than the junk ass die cast

Agreed, and that Toyota is not likely producing these to an industry spec as closely as a certified and conformed product would be.

Just generalities that there isn't much gained with either material is all that I was going for besides curiousity.

    Hey now.

Just to pile onto this shit-show..since the plastic is more FLEXIBLE...might it "mate" to the housing threads/base better, reducing the chance of a leak? I know that's the o-ring's job, but still. I can imagine it also being less likely to "bugger up" the threads in the housing, because of said flexibility. Assuming that's even possible.

I think I'm going to do what the other dude did: swap them out every other change. That way you can inspect its worthiness for next time.

You're right, maybe if you shove the FRN housing up your ass, in two weeks you'd have a diamond.

Repeat after me: A higher compressive value isn't the only thing that makes a filter housing "better".

Hello all, fast forward to 3 so years later, and I am having this exact problem. I actually had a family member do my last oil change. I have always taken my 2014 Camry to Firestone. This time I tried to change it myself. Something that should have been easy turned out to be a pain. I never was able to remove the housing. The old oil filter remains. I don’t know how I am going to remove that plastic junk on my next oil change. I had several people help, but none were able to remove it!

Carefully dremel the flange where it contacts the upper housing.

It is not the problem of the nylon, but the monkey doing the oil changes. Follow the torque spec and live a happy life.

The aluminum housing is for sure better. I’ve done all the oil changes on my truck from day 1. Torqued to spec the aluminum housing just comes off way easier than the plastic. On my 9th oil change 4 of which are with the aluminum housing.
