If I knockout with propane heater running in my shell will I get poisoned and die?

So I have this my lil buddy heater which is powered by those lil coleman propane tanks and I sleep in my truck shell, if I knockout with it on will I get poisoned and die? Serious question, just is crazy to me if the fucker leaks ill be dead, i do have a co2 detector but still, how safe are these thibgs really.

 

If you want to be sure you wake up alive use that CO detector
Is it new? Go buy a new one if its not, they come now with as a sealed unit with a 10 year battery.
Don't fuck around with CO!! It's called the silent killer for a reason!

Also keep anything flammable away from your heater like bedding, clothes etc!

If you have ventilation then it shouldn’t be a problem huge problem…but like all the vents open…

The issue is not as much as carbon dioxide as it is carbon monoxide. Which propane heaters do in fact produce. On a much smaller issue, fire in general will eat up oxygen is small space with no airflow.

I realize opening up the window vents is counter productive to heating the space…for that reason I’d say a electronic heater or some good down would be your best option.

 

Use a CO detector. They're very loud and should go off well before levels are high enough for any health issues start. Yes these things can be dangerous but following the instructions will definitely help avoid any of those issues. If they were that big of an issue though they likely wouldn't sell them or they'd specifically say they weren't for indoor use.

 

It literally says in the directions…”leave a window open of 12 square inches.” It also says there’s a sensor that will shut it off if it detects carbon monoxide…so there’s already a detector built into it.

Because the manufacture knows sensors fail and IF you wake up to figure out your mistake…you’ll have a nice headache.

A camper shell is too small an area to use any propane heater safely in. Many many people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning in confined areas and some die every year. If you open the windows and vents wide enough to dissipate the carbon monoxide safely the heater will not be effective. I wouldn’t trust a c0 detector in a small place like a shell. Those devices can fail as can the batteries.
You mention those devices leaking but it’s not leaking that will kill you. When the fuel burns to make heat, carbon monoxide is created and that’s what kills people. Carbon monoxide is odorless so you won’t smell it.
I read not long ago about a young couple who went camping in a full size pickup with a large overhead camper. A very cold night so they turned the propane heater on. They were both dead the next morning.
Just dress warm and get a damn warm sleeping bag. Forget the propane heater.

 

I made a mistake since that was off memory. That was an older model. they made it “4 square inches” of ventilations.

Also the sensor is a oxygen sensor, so it accounts for carbon dioxide but monoxide is still a problem and written all over the instruction manual

That little heater is probably way overkill for what you're using it for but whatever you use if it burns any kind of fuel protect yourself from CO!

The heaters have sensors built into them that will shut them off if levels get high or they get tipped over. But more precaution is never a bad thing.

 

i wont use it then, ill buy one of those cig lighter adapters that can connect to a lil home electric heater, oh and if my battery dies i have 2 jumper batteries. Now I have this lil buddy hearer never used

 

That "SENSOR" is just a pilot light and a thermocouple. If the pilot light does not have enough oxygen to burn, then the thermocouple gets too cold and shuts off the gas. Completely mechanical process.

Don't let if fool you that it's actually actively sensing anything

 

Just get a warm down sleeping bag.

 

NOOOOOO! A CO detector will not wake you in time. Get a proper heater that ducts the exhaust out and uses forced clean air for heat. Amazon sells diesel powered (heating fuel) 12v (for the fuel pump and air blower fan) that don’t make you breathe the exhaust fumes or rely on a CO detector to protect you.

I run mine outside and have a dryer vent hose blow the heated clean air into our RTT.

You'll be better off with a sub-zero sleeping bag with no heat in the shell.

Before you go to sleep, strip off all your clothes and put on fresh, clean, DRY clothes. Wool socks and a stocking cap. Don't drink alcohol.

You'll be fine.

I have slept in a canvas pup tent in below zero temperatures without heat following those guidelines.
