..........this proud 'even if they were a REMF' has used the skill gained in those two tours in the Army for the last 30+ years to earn 6 figures with every other week off, YMMV

    I completely agree.

I was a REMF, and even though my entire 3 years of service was in pure peace time, I had no way of knowing where my military journey may take me. My dad was a Korean War veteran, my grandfather a WW2 vet. I was, and still am, very proud that I chose to serve, even for just those few years. I debated making a career, but since it was peace time, it was all but impossible to make it to the NCO ranks during my time in. I knew tons of guys that had 8+ years service and were E4P's (E4 Promotable - they had been to and passed the NCO promotion board, just needed enough promotion points to make it to E5). At that time, the cut off to make E5 was 995 points. It was really hard to get more than a couple hundred points, so very few ever made it to E5. I knew many E5's with 12 - 15 years service, and several E6's with the same. So I decided to ETS after my initial enlistment and use my GI Bill to get my Engineering degree.

To this very day, I still have a lot of my "military bearing" and discipline that I learned while serving.

Also, check out this Toyota "Helux" that was at Camp Leatherneck Afghanistan. It had bulletproof windows and beadlocked wheels.

Damn.... 34 years in, and I'm honestly not sure if there's one picture of me 'at work' - the only photo I know for sure, of me in uniform is my grad portrait from basic training in 198*Cough* *Cough*

    Was enlisting a good thing?

It was, for those of us that came home walking and not in a body bag.

You might recognize this then.... of course I'm sure there are a shit ton more Unit emblems painted there now than there were in 1986 when I took this pic... I was in what was then the 581st Maint Co, from 1986 - 88.
    Painted Rock.jpg

This was the motor pool where I worked, I assume the buildings are still there, but maybe not, and I'm sure Irwin is much more built up these days than back then.

Then to now. Pops and I after graduation from boot camp in 2001. Pops when he pinned me to Chief in 2012. Last photo is right now on my last deployment in 2022. I hate that I don’t have more but in 01-06 we didn’t have phones to take pictures.

The pic in the greens was my wedding day, man she had no idea what she was getting into! The dcu pic was in Ramadi’05
