Surprising. Mayne they were sold out of the Pittsburg. Still not bad for the Icon.

Speaking from experience, some of the cheaper tools mentioned here may work in a pinch but as I have experienced even with Snap On tools, when they break or fail mid use, it can hurt and leave you stranded. I would trust a higher grade tool more though (not expensive, just better quality).

For emergency gear, I'd lean towards higher quality stuff (it's up to you to determine what your high and low ends are). But for the torque wrenches I keep in the garage, Harbor Freight seems to work as well as my pricier ones. And if it breaks, I just go down the street to HF and pick up another.

My thought is that if you're changing a tire on the roadside and your torque wrench is broken, you just tighten the shit down hard with the breaker bar or whatever and then check the torque when you get to safety. I don't know that it needs to be milspec in that situation :)

Am I the only one who still uses one of these?

I change a tire in a few minutes with it. I know it's not AS effective at removing stuck lugs but I've never met a lug I couldn't break free with it, and I've changed A LOT of tires (I like to help people stuck on the highway). It also helps guarantee even torque application too (not cocking the wrench and stripping the bolt). I have an electric impact and torque wrench for home applications.

    WTF!

Jesus people. Torque wrenches in your truck for swapping a tire in an emergency? Are you people nuts? Keep one at home so you can torque properly then. A breaker bar for the road is plenty.

I remove the tires on my vehicles relatively frequently since I do all my own maintenance and swap to secondary sets of wheels and tires for the winter.

-Never once have I thought to put a torque wrench in my vehicle, I have three at home where I know they dont get abused, and I can rely on them.

I am surprised that you guys actually torque wheels to a specification. Ive always put them snug, put on the ground tightened up, then recheck tightness after a short drive. If I am really doing this wrong please let me know....

LOL When I'm at home and it's not an emergency, I've gotten in the habit of torqueing everything to spec. I'm not a great mechanic (or even a mechanic at all)... So if I can take the guesswork out of how-tight-is-tight, then I do it. Out in the field -- I just tighten the shit hard

I prefer this style too. I like that you can use the inertia of the perpendicular arm to spin the tool for quicker removal of the nuts.

I can think of plenty other things that deserve a WTF but a torque wrench doesn’t meet that mark. I don’t keep mine in the truck for just lugs but other things that may come up too. You never know what or when and that’s a tool I’ve added to my just in case… I mean it’s small and out of the way, has a hard case. Not exactly a oh my god what’s the matter with you type of thing but I also torque anything that has a spec. You do you boo.

not exactly relevant in this case, I mean to say you carry this tool you have no common sense… makes no sense. I can think of plenty examples, in our current climate, that’s apparent common sense has been lost but for a tool?

I'm not dicking around on the side of the highway. Zip it off, zip it on. Last tire change on a coworkers car was sub 2 minutes and back to safety.

And you can also use it to put your oil filter housing on.

2nd Gen FTMFW on that front.

But yeah, my sister's Rav4 now has a new one thanks to the handiwork of a Toyota shop tech.

Keep my snap-on torque wrenches at home. $450 each. For items like cylinder heads, suspension components, wheels, you want proper torque.

Craftsman or a mid grade torque wrench should be fine. I don't understand folks that buy a $40 torque wrench for critical items.

I have no idea why they put it there, and I'm too afraid to ask. All I know is I'm the only one with a window in my office. I'll accept the risk of electrocution.
