Long as the inlet and the outlets are the same as on your truck and the length is about the same you shouldn’t have to modify anything, muffler is a muffler

Looks like only 05-12 are direct bolt on...

but if you want to weld, then anything is possible.

Thanks guys saw a 3rd gen on Craigslist and oem mufflers are usually good for quite a while so figured maybe someone else had tried this swap. Haven't welded in a while so I'd probably would try a clamping method but I'll need to do more research to see how feasible it is. Much appreciated for the replys

I've been looking at the same thing. Guys on Facebook claim they are completely different. But laying side-by-side they're almost identical. The only thing that is not identical is the hangers and the flange. That's as far as I can tell from photos anyway. Most of the guys that have done the swap said it was extremely easy with very minor modification needed

I just put a 3rd gen muffler on my 2nd gen (2007). I had a single inlet dual outlet flowmaster that was on the truck when I bought it and couldn’t stand the noise and drone.

It won’t bolt up unfortunately but the pipes are in similar configuration. I cut the pipes (and had to run it to see what it sounded like because I’m childish) then used some stainless band clamps and a 90 degree rubber exhaust hanger on the rear most hanger. All of the other ones lined up perfectly. There was another thread that stated they had to cut part of the bend that goes over the axle but I didn’t, maybe due to my general HD leafs.

One problem I had was the size of the pipe. They are the same diameter, but it is 60mm if I remember right which is between 2.25” and 2.5”. I used 2.5” band clamps and cut one of the band clamps to act as a sleeve and used the other to wrap around it. It wasn’t tight enough for my comfort without the extra sleeve. I also tried the 2.25” clamps but they seemed way too small. I slathered a lot of the ultra copper permatex on there and used an impact to crank it down. It has been holding great and so far leak free after a couple weeks. A little spray pb-blaster silicone and the hangers slid off easily.

In hindsight I probably would have taken it get welded on, but I already bought the parts and getting it welded was always a backup.

You can also heat up the hanger until it glows then bend it, but I was afraid I’d break it then be forced to buy another part or weld it.

I think all of the 3rd gen mufflers are the same (not stainless) until you reach the TRD Pro, which is stainless and could add a few HP.

I just went and checked and unfortunately the new muffler pipe is a little loose in the clamp so I’d definitely suggest welding it up. Maybe a better fitting clamp or better cleaning before applying the silicone would have helped. Now to go find a cheap welder…
