TBH, I've never gone off-road, but it's my eventual goal. Well, I've driven many dirt roads in my low-clearance 2WD sedan that isn't meant to do such things, but obviously there were things I would not venture doing with such a vehicle, that I now want to do with my Taco.

Looking under the truck, I see that the transfer case and exhaust and other such components are exposed to the ground without any shielding. Is this ever a problem if you're driving on trails with rocks and such? Suppose I don't want to get a lift, is there some other way to add some more protection to the transfer case, or is it superfluous?

    Thanks!

No reason to worry until you get to the point that you are hearing steel on rock. Enjoy your taco.

I've been driving off road since the 1970's. Only 2-3 of those vehicles had skid plates that protected the transfer case. Several that protected the underside of the engine. You have to be in some pretty extreme off road situations for it to be a problem. They do make aftermarket skid plates that will do what you want. But for me it isn't worth the expense.
