Well I took a month off work...and let me tell you...its awesome staying at home with the wife and kid lounging around, working on hobbies/projects and basically doing whatever we like. Getting paid while at home is awesome. I guess one has to obviously be active and have hobbies otherwise one will get bored.

Tomorrow is my first day back to work and cant wait for my next vacation. I have another 11 years before being eligible for retirement at 50. But honestly I would probably do an extra 5 years [IMG]

Yeah, going to be a sad day going back, and rough week.

Glad you got the time off with the fam.

I still have 20+ years before retirement, but I work from home, so not all bad.

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.
I was between jobs for about 3 months back in 2015. We were financially stable so i took some time. First month was great, second month I finished most of my home projects, third month I was scrambling for a job and settled for anything to get back to work... It was fun but I don't think I could ever retire...

Any time I take more than a week off it's a rough start getting back to work. If only I was good looking enough to make money on the internet and not actually have to work a real job.

I’ve been retired for three years, miss some of the people, not the stress.

Retire in 14 months, but who’s counting? Been at the current job 18 years. Been fully employed without any significant break for 40 years. Want to enjoy some time off with wife to travel and putt around the house. Then hope to find a hobby job I enjoy.

@gillies66, start looking and find yourself something you'd like to do when retired now.

I retired at 55 and been retired awhile. I've been asked if I wanted to work numerous times. My response, " Sorry but I don't have time to work "... I have plenty to do to occupy my time !

Good luck - I just retired for the third time. Three jobs ago a light went off in my head and I realized my interest and the interest of my employer were light years apart. Most of what seemed important at the time was truly meaningless in the big picture. After that day I stop stressing so much. I wish you luck - the final stretch is a tough one, but doable if you keep your head in the right place.

I think about working at hobbies. I’ve always been a cyclist, so maybe a job in a bike shop. Otherwise, maybe a small, one-man contracting effort. Quality trades people are in short supply.

May I ask, what have you done to fill your time? To seem meaningful and be satisfied. I’ll be 57 and going back to work might not be the trick.

I can relate. My perspective has changed, and the challenges seem less than significant now. This 14 months seems like the longest ever. I look forward to work because I want to, not because I have to.

Ain't soon enough...and almost within reach.
Starting my 39th year at the same place under different names in a few months and I'll be turning 61 in a few months.
I'm looking at about 16 months +/- till I hit the finish line.

Quit a job 2 years ago and was pretty much unemployed. Had plenty of savings, did some travelling, dipped my toes in freelance work. Zero regrets.

Its pretty clear to me that waiting until I retire to have fun is going to be a bad plan.

You ATC? I take a month off every other year or so and I go through the exact same thing. In fact, I just started my month off on Sunday. I'm from Ohio, somewhere in North Dakota right now and will be somewhere in Montana tonight. I'm taking the long way to New Mexico to buy peppers for enchilada sauce.

    HAHAHAHA!

I can relate. I'm in a dedicated Surgical Materials department and someone has to fill in for me for the week I'm gone...of course, they aren't familiar with product locations/PAR levels. I end up cleaning up residual open orders not processed and update quantities.

This year, I've taken 1 week off twice...the first time was during the summer when my wife and I went to Kent Island, MD and I could not stop thinking about what I needed to do the week I returned to work. The psychological stress (albeit minimal) didn't ruin our time together...but I did get a text from my manager/supervisor regarding something I wasn't gonna be there for...an FYI. I didn't appreciate it.

The second time I took a week off in early September, totally different thought process. Wife and I stayed at home and caught up with things around the house. We also ventured to the outskirts of northern Delaware and into PA. For some reason, this time I didn't think about work nor did I get any work related text messages.

For me, having a place to go to and perform the Logistics duties I learned in the US Air Force inspires me to continue working. I feel good being able to keep the department well stocked of the products used in Cath Lab. I'm involved in the initial procurement and get product built into our system for Allscripts & EPIC updates. This is my first Medical Supply job...I was Base Supply (FB/FE) not Medical (FM) account.

I was asked by one of my co-workers how long I plan on working...my answer, "until I don't feel like doing it anymore".

    Ed

Not ATC...but we do get about a month off every year if we choose to...however I always took a week or two and saved the rest of my vacation time just incase. But I will be taking a month off every year and enjoy my time. We have decided to travel my next vacation. Lucky you...you'll have a blast!
