    I just bought these. They’re GTG and super cheap. Don’t think you really “need” more than them for basic off roading.

    Dude, Kings are not the best, it’s all about what valving you want...and you are paying a lot for a “Kings” name. Some shocks are made better with higher quality parts than Kings. lol

    Not really . Those are two different statements all together. The first one just not being true at all.

    Yes. To the point of matching the right product to what the owner is going to do, that's a very valid point. I agree. But there very much is a reaapnabre market to justify the different lines of performance suspension, and not just for the "desert racer".


    But I digress. Point was OP was looking for a similar ride to the Pro foxes. Billies arent that. Plain and simple. The only addition I personally made was noting if you want a similar ride and you're going to be adding weight or want lift, then you'll need to go with another suspension set up around that price range.

    Billies are perfectly fine shocks. They're great for a ton of applications. And if people are buying for utility and that's their limit that they'll be working their truck, great. But to say that a standard 2.5 CO shock from any of the big 4 names out perform the truck is just BS.

    Not sure if the 2019 OEM Pro Fox shocks are any different than the 2018 or 2017 Pro but if it's what you want and you want new ones you don't have to spend $3,800 for them. You can get them new from Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach for about $2,800. Use the discount code Tundradude34.

    I'm not sure how 5100s on a stock truck are going to handle potholes way better than the OEM 4600s. The hit will be a little more jarring and the tire may stay a little better planted but small valving differences aren't really a substantial upgrade.

    5100s are popular because they provide a reasonably cheap way to lift yet maintain most of the travel range. 6112/5160s actually provide a major improvement but are roughly double the cost of 5100s. It takes another double in cost to provide a substantial increase in performance. That's the principle of diminishing returns.

    5100s are the secret sauce for these trucks. Better Offroad and On Road performance.

    I don’t know how they do it without blue anodizing and remote resis, but they do. There are people here who know what I’m talking about, and there are people here who paid way too much money to make their Tacoma handle 2.72% better, but with 175% more bro cred. Just saying.

    Can anyone give me a good example of a rear replacement shock for a 2017 Tacoma w/ just shy of 2" of lift?? South of $1k please.

    Well build it for the way you will drive it,
    I saw going to put 6100s and 5160s on
    All parts were about 1500 or so, but after talking to State 48 Overland , for the way I use my truck it’s a waist of money , so I went with 5100s and saved a load of money , I love the way it rides and has a life time warranty!!

    I want it to handle like a 'Vette on the road, and handle gravel fire roads like a Baja Racer. Is that too much to ask??

    On a serious note though, my driveway is over a 1/4 mile dirt (shale and limestone) w/ a decent incline and I run a lot of woods road a few times every month on my property. Factory shocks were doing ok, but I can tell they're done now, as I'm bottoming out a lot if hitting any bumps at all with, well, any speed at all.

    Looks like the 5160s are really close to the budget I was hoping to stay in and probably a great bang for the buck. I've had a few different vehicles with OME coilovers though, including my current 2017 Tacoma, so I am partial to the ARB brand, or at least their marketing, so I was really looking closely at the BP-51s for the rear. They would surely be overkill, as it would sure be nice to dial them in initially, but I'd never mess with the adjustments once I got it right.

    Sounds like the Ironman Foam Cell Pro's may be up your ally. More capable than basic Nitro OME or Bilstein 5100, but still much cheaper than BP-51s.
