I was recently rear ended by an F250. I had my tailgate down hauling some lumber. My tailgate took the brunt of the impact. Somehow the lumber didn’t punch thru the bed. I don’t know how. I guess the composite is pretty tough stuff.

The lumber punched a hole in his radiator and his oil cooler. He had to be towed away.

Bummer. But $10 says it's nothing more than the tailgate so all things considered, not bad.

(Based on that one image & assuming lumber wasn't overhanging)

Needs whole new tailgate and hinges. The tailgate doesn’t close all the way now. Bumper is actually fine.

The good thing is that I am fine. Vehicles can be replaced. The last time I was rear ended my car was totaled and the other driver took off.

It appears to be the same to me. Does anyone have any measurements they can send my way?

Dang… that stinks. Lots of accidents lately. Glad your person and others weren’t injured.

Doesn’t seem like you need to spend major bucks to fix your truck though. It’s interesting the impact like that.

My luck, it would be some final destination shįt.

You’re not kidding about lots of accidents. I’ve been working with my insurance company and my preferred body shop to see when I can get it fixed and they are so busy that I can’t get it repaired for 5 weeks.

I had a similar thing happen to me a few months back. I was toting my mountain bike up to my cabin and had the tailgate down with the bed extender deployed. I stopped at a local farm stand to by some fresh produce and while I was sitting in my truck making a phone call, a lady was leaving and backed right into my lowered tailgate, putting a baseball size dent in the leading edge similar to the OPs damage.

There is no repairing that damage, it is either replace the tailgate or learn to live with the dent. Her insurance covered my tailgate replacement and all tolled it was about $1,800 bucks for a new one painted and installed. They swapped out the lock mechanism and camera stuff from my old tailgate as they were fine.

I must admit I had a little smirk when I first read this. This word in German is schadenfreude.

Glad you are okay. And the Taco took it pretty well.

I must joke...with the current cost of lumber these days...how did the lumber fare? Hopefully it wasn't expensive live edge or something

I pulled up the bed mat and it looks like my bed might have been shifted back a bit. The dirt ring around it has moved haha.

Does anyone know if the circled slight crease is normal?

If I was the insurance company for the F250 guy I would be asking if he noticed if you had the extended load flagged. I hate lawyers, but often you need to think like one. In any event it would be your word against his. Of course you had it flagged, right?
