Is that a TN law requirement? How far extended?

Yeah it looks like the whole bed moved towards the cab. I don't have a kink there. Check on the back side of your cab, in that gap between the bed and the cab. Do you see any marks or dents on the cab where the bed struck it?

The lumber is almost all fine. An inch or two of a few of the boards will need to be cut off but nothing too bad. I had all the lumber stacked and tied together in one big mass. So I’m sure that saved a lot of it. It was a 40’ red cedar that I had all milled up that day. It’s just all going to be used for garden beds and a greenhouse in the back yard.

A few days before I was hauling some live edge black walnut so I would have been in trouble if that was hit.

Im not a lawyer, but I’ve looked it up before and you have to mark it if it’s overhanging your vehicle by more than 4ft in the rear. The lumber was only past the tailgate a few inches. The sheriff deputy didn’t mention anything about the overhang being a problem.

it doesn’t look like the bed and cab struck each other, but after measuring the gap between the cab and the bed it’s not even anymore. The drivers side is a bit farther away than the passenger side.

I'd simply point out what you see and let them run with it, I tend to think anything more and you'll probably make the decision maker not like you.
Glad everyone is okay, you're right, we can replace vehicles.

Maybe I should have been driving with my tailgate down.

When I got rear-ended my frame slightly kinked on one side, right above one of the rear wheels. I didn't even notice it until the body shop pointed it out to me. So when my bed was misaligned, it wasn't because the bed moved, it was because the frame changed by like a half an inch.

Anyhow, I feel your pain, man.

My favorite types of threads. Here come the experts. It will buff, do PDR, part it put, your frame is bent, the wood was too far out and it is your fault, your load was way too heavy for that truck, etc. Also get a lawyer, you were injured, collect $200 and pass go.

I have done personal auto claims for over 20 years as a rep and manager for 2 major carriers and I always get a chuckle out of some of the replies. Then I post something and it gets ignored or disputed. (Probably cause I’m a loser:D)

It does not matter if he marked the wood or not, he was rear ended. The duty of care, following too close, keep proper distance is all on the Ford. Unless OP is an a contrib neg state where they try to pin 1% liability on him so they can deny the claim the wood is not an issue. He may need a bed if the floor is buckled, leave the to inspector seeing it.

This thread will go for 2 weeks like all the others with the usual fighting and insults ending in few whimpers and congrats that your truck was fixed.

By now you realized this is my FRIDAY thread. Happy Friday

Has a dealer given you an estimate? I'd be asking for a new bed as well just so they take it off and inspect for additional damage.

They briefly looked it over and said it needed at least a new tailgate. When they get it in and get it up on the lift they will inspect the underside of the truck and look at everything else to determine what else needs to be repaired or replaced. The tailgate work estimate is about $1,700.

Always. It’s your rights as a citizen to fleece the insurance companies for all you can. :D.

The bodily injury “industry” is a billion dollar business involving so many people. There are those that get a scratch and try to get a few hundred for their pain and suffering. Then there are the ones where the car is not bad but not drivable. It starts with the tow driver getting kick backs from shops to bring cars in. Then shops have relationships with attorneys and direct the customer to the attorney. The attorney has their own doctors. And incredibly everyone (except truly injured) are always cured once the policy limits are reached or the insurance company draws the line.

I dropped it off today at the body shop. I’ll update the thread when I get an update from them on the damage. On the plus side, Enterprise showed up with a 2021 Tacoma Off Road. Lmao
