If the gladiator came in a 6ft bed config, I'd be driving a jeep pickup, Rubicon trim.

I really wish Toyota made it easier to get 35s under these trucks.

A buddy of mine had a little off-road hill/trail behind his garage for the kids to ride their dirt bikes on. Other buddy decided to take his Jeep up it. The gas tank fell out...

The Tacoma bridges more gaps than a Jeep. Off roading, utility/work, reliability, on road driving (IFS), stability off road, crash rating, Toyota refinement (their manufacturing process) and resale value.

The Jeep only has a few things going for it. The ability to run 35”+ tires (it takes mods or you will break parts), solid front axle and short wheel base.

    They both have their pros/cons

A properly built Tacoma will get you just about anywhere a Jeep will go. The Jeep will just be easier and take less experience to get you there.

    Why not own both.

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
My son and I are in a "Jeep" club (it's actually a 4x4 club but mostly Jeeps). When we joined there was one guy with a 2nd gen Tacoma, we brought in an R50 Infiniti QX4. Since then we have traded up to a 4th gen 4Runner and my 3rd gen Tacoma, and we now have everything from Hummers to FJ Cruisers and Land Cruisers and I am working to get an XTerra into the crowd. The Jeep guys always give us crap about "the go around for the 'Yota's" when we hit the gnarly stuff requiring 37s or larger and short wheel base, but they then make up for it at the end when they say "OK, we all drove the same trails but the Toyotas get to just drive home in their trail rigs while we load up on trailers". They are great folks who acknowledge we can do 95% of the same trails as their Jeeps but that we also don't spend a fortune on trailers and large trucks to haul them around extra. Some of the guys are actually dicks about it and refuse to be decent to anyone who has so much as the wrong year Jeep (diversion tip: bring up square headlight Jeeps when they start bashing your Taco) but most are very happy to have folks offroading and participating in the sport. The more experienced guys even take the time to learn about IFS so that they can better help guide us through obstacles in a manner that is fitting for the way the truck will react.

I'm in the same boat, I hate driving the jeep though. It doesn't feel safe over 50 mph. Plus i've had to fix so many things on the damn jeep. It's annoying every month there's something. And the squeaky brake pedal annoys the hell out of me

I think Jeep goofed when they didn't build a 2dr version of the Gladiator with more cargo capacity. I am sure people haul other people in their Gladiators, and utilize the interior space for cargo. Most of the Gladiators I see on the road only have the driver sitting in them. Same goes for most of the 4dr trucks on the road.

    At price?
    Family seating?
    Fuel economy?
    Reliability?

It's obviously subjective and not so cut and dry if the question OP asks is so vague.

Because I spend about half of my driving time offroad and the only way to get more clearance is bigger tires.

Or pick better lines. Are your trails really that hard, or are you over thinking it?

You can put 33" tires on your Taco without a lift or rubbing (minimal at most). That gives you ~1.5" of additional clearance over stock. If you went to 35" tires, you would only gain a total of ~3" of clearance over stock. 3" is only a big deal in porn.

Let's assume I probably know my local area better than you do.

Furthermore, the breakover angle on the dclb is pretty bad even with 35s. Especially relative to my jeeps. Obviously everything is a compromise, but wishing it was easier to modify a vehicle is not a bad thing...

And 3" of extra clearance is huge when you're crawling. Maybe we should just run 28s since "it's not that big of a deal"
