Been hard at work practicing TIG that it had been a hot minute since I had picked up the MIG torch. It is amazing how much translates when you really think about the process and what is taking place. I can say for sure that my prep work for TIG has helped my sloppy prep work with MIG.

You may not want to weld all the way to the top of the brake mounting hole on this weld. On some trucks a weld right next to the brake mount will require the customer having to bring the caliper for clearance.

I’ve never really taken pics of that weld, but I found a pic where you can see about where I used to weld them to.

Thanks brother, I went back and cleaned that up. Wouldn’t be too cool to have a jacked up caliper dragging because of slag or an overzealous welder.

it’s pretty rare that it doesn’t clear, but I’ve even had issues if I lay too tall of a bead just past halfway up that joint. It’s an easy fix, but I wouldn’t want to grind my calipers so I try not to make anyone else

Took apart the Weldanpower today. Nothing inside was obviously damaged except for some denting of the ends of two condensers due to a collapsed motor mount. The mystery part turned out to be the electromagnet that idles down the Briggs motor. I re-insulated the wires and installed it where it was supposed to be. Tried to start it but the starter is locked up solid. Next project, rebuild or replace the starter.

I ended up using the rope pulley and it runs, makes power for a grinder, and welds well enough to burn a hole right through an old mower blade I was trying it out on with 6011 rod. I’m stoked! Pictures for the interested.

I’m sure my welding skills are a bit rusty but all I wanted to do was run a bead at a fairly high amperage just to see how happy the welder was operating there. Blew the hole at 130 amps and ran the bead at 80. 1/8 rod was a bit small but I’m sure it’ll work just fine for fence welding!

Rolling the round lid off a giant can of electrodes a dude got in my way just as I was rolling the last bit off and when my arm bumped him and stopped the lid kept going like a big razor blade right through my finger.
