Hey Guys...I've been lurking for a long time and have learned a lot....now I have a question: got my oil changed at the dealer today on my '08 dbl cab TRD Off-Road, 40K miles. They tried to get me to powerflush the power steering and the fuel injectors. Are they trying to sell me stuff I don't really need? Haven't had any steering or performance issues at all. Your input is appreciated!

The dealership will always try to upsell you, follow your owner's manual for maintence. Ask the service writer, How much commission is he making off the upselling of service.

ha ha ... flushing the power steering.. What did you do to it? You don't "power flush" ANYTHING on your car. I've never heard of, or seen a sign for any of those snake oil treatments other than at the lube and muffler shops or in pop up ads.

No reputable mechanic will offer a "power flush" of anything as preventive maintenance.
It would ONLY be used if you have some sort of problem and don't want to pay to have it taken apart.. say your kid puts gravy in your system or something like that... One of those.. well.. if you're not going to fix it, maybe you can get a month or two out of it with a "power flush" getting bits of your disintegrating parts out of there.

Same goes for those transmission flushes.. If you get junk out.. its because your transmission is broken.. its not fixing it by removing big chunks of gear and clutch.

Its not upselling, its ripping you off. DO NOT RETURN to that dealer and let us know who he is.

Injectors?... eh.. people don't do enough to their injectors, but offering it without diagnosing them is a bit much.

Yes the dealer is upselling you. Just do the scheduled stuff. I've never heard of having to flush the power steering.

Welcome utahskierdave. As another Tacoma owner living on the Wasatch Front may I ask which dealer is telling you this? Thanks.

One more thing. I believe buy a bottle or 2 of Techron and dumping it in the tank would be the same. I've fallen for this scam before and they don't remove the injectors. They just dump cleaner in your tank. Now cleaning the throttle body, and mass air flow sensor might be legitimate though. I run a double dose of Techron/Gumout/STP/etc. in a full tank just before changing out the fuel filter.

Rum! Yea! Only fuel additive I found useful for cleaning the fuel system is BG 44k, good stuff. Or seafoam if you are wanting to store your truck for a few months or remove water from the gas...

Upselling implies you are getting value at least...

Run a bottle of fuel system cleaner through in the tank before every oil change and you're not likely to ever need an injector power flush. I'd suggest Techron because it cleans combustion chamber and valve deposits, seafoam is only benefitial against fuel system gums and varnish. But if you want to use seafoam it's still cheaper than injector power flushing and less likely to damage things.

Power flush of power steering is a completely unnecessary. If you want to put fresh fluid in just suck out the old from the reservoir and replace it for about $3 and the cost of a turkey baster.

You need to power flush the air too in the tires. Stale air rife with rubber molecules slows down your truck. With toyota genuine power smart air ,you will have eco green air that protects the enviorment............

if you even started to believe a hint of it YOU are a sheeple. Sad part about americe , the reailers and marketeers became extreme profiteers, looking for every nickel they cantake from you.
