    Hey Guys,
I am looking to buy a New Tacoma TRD OR but I’m debating if I should get a manual or automatic transmission. I don’t even know how drive manual but Im willing to learn. This would be my first truck ever. Any advice on buying a new Tacoma would be helpful… trim, transmission, add ons.

My advice would be learn to drive manual first and see which one your most comfortable with. And you can even test drive both manual and automatic. People can tell you this and that about it but in the end everyone has their own preferences so i recommend you find yours

Hmm is there lots of stop and go traffic where you are? Hills? My opinion is they are fun till they arent. Stop and go traffic isnt fun and hills are challenging even for experienced manual drivers. Best to learn on a used vehicle vs new. Nothing wrong with auto trans.

    Welcome

    LA LA Land, eh?

I'm from LA (but live on the east coast now) and learned to drive manual as a teenager...took several years to get comfortable with it and one accident but I eventually got the hang of it.

I graduated from LA Wilson HS...the school on the hill. Driving up that was challenging especially when there was a line of traffic going up!

Advice about learning on an old stick-shift car is recommended. Lord knows, you don't wanna treat your NEW Taco like that old beater you learn on.

Welcome! FWIW I had a buddy teach me to drive manual in his trans am, he'd stand behind me on a hill to practice hill starts and I laid rubber the first time, so yeah I echo what others have said - learn on an older vehicle first!

If you haven’t ever driven a standard I’d stick with an auto. I learned to drive with a stick shift and regularly drive 4500 and 5500 trucks with a stick but would prefer my auto Tacoma most of the time, especially off-road.
    Also welcome to TW

As much as my 2016 transmission hunts for gears, I would still say go auto, especially if it is your daily driver. The only compelling reason I would say to go manual is for the different gear ratio if you are planning on putting 33"+ tires on it and don't want to re-gear, or you think it will be worth a bunch of money when they eventually stop making them (which it probably won't). I think a lot of people are drawn to the allure of a manual but I think auto wins in practicality and resale value.

Resale is a key issue in this choice, I think. I learned how to drive on a manual and I have owned both. Every time I went to trade in or sell a manual, the price was much lower than its automatic counterpart.

My coworker taught me how to drive manual in a customers Mini Cooper lol. I’d recommend it because it’s a lot of fun. Mine is not manual though :(

    be afraid, be very afraid?

i don't get it. i still say if you want the MT get the MT. and if you don't like it for whatever reason you'll probably be able to sell it while losing nothing. but i personally don't think a few gear grinds, lurches, and stalls is a valid reason to not get a MT right outta the gate if you want it. just one opinion.
