After 4 months, I finally got notice that my truck should be in Nov 9-15. However, when I talked to the dealer today, he asked if I would be willing to come in and sign everything by the 3rd, so I can just drive in and get my truck when it arrives.

There's no reason I can see why this would be good for me to do. Are they just trying to make a quota? Why would they even ask this? Seems a bit shady to me.

Why would you buy a vehicle that isn't there?

I inquired about a truck at a dealer. The truck was in transit. Ok, cool! Let me know when it arrives. The next week they asked me if I wanted to sign the paper work, the truck still was not in. No!

Exactly my thought. They took a deposit in early June. I'll pay the rest when I see the truck I ordered in person.

Don't pay more than the required deposit until the truck is on the lot and ready for pickup.

In this market they probably have other buyers waiting. They might just want to know you are for sure going to buy it.

I put a deposit on my truck before arrival. They gave me Toyota's $1K rebate in the contract without knowing it only applied if I financed through Toyota.

When my truck arrived and was being prepared for delivery, the finance department told me they could only honor $500 instead of the $1K but didn't tell me the reason why. They wanted me to pay the difference which was breaking the contract.

I spoke to the Manager of the dealership and told him what happened...the finance department ended up adding the $500 to my trade-in to make up the difference.

This is why I will insist the dealership NOT run a credit report IF I walk in with a pre-approved loan. Why would they need to run a credit report if I already have a loan?

It's too late to do that now but when we go looking for a new car for my wife, we can take that approach.

He put a deposit down in June...they already have his word in a contact that he intends to buy.

It's shady to ask OP to sign papers when the vehicle hasn't arrived.

They are trying to get your sale on October books, probably too meet a quota. But it's your money not theirs. I advise against that heavily, opens many doors to screwing you over.

The deposit doesn't mean squat. They will sell it to someone else for more money and refund his deposit. There have been numerous posts on here where that exact thing happened.

If it were me, and I was getting a good deal in this market, I would go ahead and sign the papers. If there is a problem when you take delivery you can back out of the deal. However, if the OP doesn't feel comfortable doing that he shouldn't.

Having said all that, I see your point. And during normal times I would agree with you 100%.

In this market, even if he did back out when the truck arrived, it's not like it would collect any dust before it sells.

Typical. We did it so I could be present for signing because I was on call for working Wildfires and my Wife could just go get it
    Worked out fine.
The payments didn't start for about 6 weeks after delivery.
Didn't cause us an issue. As it turned out she drove up the driveway with the truck and the next morning I got called out.

Truck was damaged in transit, when you get it there may be signs of repair. If you already sign the paperwork you cant turn it away.

Probably not what happened, but just a thought.

    Question for OP.

Do you have a signed Sales Agreement? This should detail the deposit, the truck with trim/options/color/VIN, final sale price, estimated delivery date, signatures of dealer and buyer.

If not, then suggest to ONLY finalize the Sales Agreement.

BTW, who cares when the Dealer books his sale. That is the dealer's business, not the customer.

So, why sign a contract if it can just be scrapped?

I would figure someone else would come along and take my truck (if they scrapped our contract). I'm thinking it's not standard procedure to violate signed contracts.

I'm just glad my issue was resolved.
