The LED SAE J583 Fog Pod & Fog Light Review

I have a sudden urge to replace the 42 inch DD light bar with 5-6 SS5's

Can someone school me on the pro's and cons of the light bar vs. multiple pod setups?

 

No cons. But multiple pods you can choose your own optic pattern. Such as in 6 pod setup do:

According to some recent posts about the bumper kits for Broncos, even the SS3 will receive the backlight treatment by the end of the year. I have mixed feelings about it- I don't particularly feel the need for accent lighting. I tapped my backup SSC2s into the turn signals but really didn't need to.

 

I cannot wait to see the specs on those new pods. Better start saving now….

What's great is we will no longer have to worry about mounting behind grilles. A dab of hot glue and you can mount then right in the grille.

 

I spent a bit of time researching if it was legal to add rear fogs to vehicles as I have been on enough trips where bad weather rolls in and I can’t see anybody. I can’t seem to find a good/correct answer. I am leaning towards “I am just going to do it because my safety is worth more than a potential ticket,” but wanted to see if you had any idea if they can be added. I am assuming that if they can be added, they would have to perform similarly to front facing fogs?

 

Rear fogs are legal in the US, plenty of vehicles sold in the US have them from the factory like Land Rover, Audi and other European makes. It wouldn't be any different than adding compliant front fogs to a vehicle that didn't come with front fogs from the factory.

the problem is that 99% of the owners with factory rear fogs never turn it off. Pretty sure many of us questioned ourselves why the hell the driver in front of me has a bright ass left tail light. It's irritating and you should only use it during inclement weather.

 

I had to run to the other side of the county and back last night in the rain. It had rained about 2" in the previous 12 hours and was still coming down in sheets. The wind was gusting to 35 MPH and most of my hour behind the wheel was on unlit expressways. Was it dark? You bet. Did visibility suck? You bet. Like @crashnburn80 though, I had a secret weapon - my Diode Dynamics SS3 Max selective yellow fogs.

The factory LED headlights in my new 4Runner are acceptable, but nowhere near as good as my Tacoma with the Ultimate Headlight Upgrade and the (now unavailable) Osram Hyper All Season bulbs. I wasn't 5 minutes into my trip when I decided to flip on the heavy artillery. Man, what a difference! Not only could I actually see what was in front of me, but not a single person flashed me the whole trip. (I did go to great lengths to get the aim perfect though.)

The funniest thing was the kid in the riced out Civic with deep blue drop in LED headlight bulbs that I passed. As you might guess with that color temperature going for him, he obviously couldn't see crap in front of him. He immediately sucked in behind me and drafted me for 15 miles or so until he got off. I liked my SS3 Pros, but the Maxes are even better!

 

Damn I may have to use that idea for a rear foglight.

Especially after dealing with the driving conditions @Crashburn80 mentioned and we're supposedly gonna get hit with another heavy downpour.

It's always a fun time when everyone gets behind you when you're the only one who has ample light output to actually see where the road is.

 

Jealous of you guys with snow. Here I sit wondering if I should bother putting the snow tires on or not. I think I will just to get in the spirit of things...

 

I can't wait to see how my 21' Manual handles the snow with these bitches.
