How many miles between oil changes?

I thought most people go 10k miles between oil changes. Why does Toyota reset the maintenance light for every 5k miles? I’m at 65k and due for an oil change. Just got one done at 60k. Should I wait until 70k?

 

Synthetic or mineral oil in there now? Driving conditions/ length of change intervals may also be a factor

 

Could also be for tire rotation

 

I do it every 5k with a tire rotation. Id rather spend the extra $30-40 and have peace of mind

 

I’ve always only gotten oil changes at the dealership so whatever their service provides. I’m in norther va so driving conditions aren’t bad. And I hardly drive.

 

I run full syn, reset the light. When it goes off, I wait for the next mild weather Saturday. Might be a week, might be a month. I don't sweat it. I let the light annoy me. So my changes end up being somewhere between 5 - 7k, and with full syn, I'm safe.

Mind you these trucks are spec'd for dino only. That's a whole other can o' worms, but if actually running dino oil, 5k makes perfect sense, so Toyota's logic makes sense.

 

this is exactly what I do. 5k intervals but don’t rush when the light comes on. Sometimes might be 6k, NBD running synthetic.

more frequent oil changes are cheap insurance.

5K if you love your engine

 

Run it to 5k with your normal lube/filter combo under typical conditions. Then, send an oil sample off to Blackstone for analysis and check the box on the form stating something like “I’m interested in extending oil change intervals.”

They’ll let you know how much life is left in your oil at the end of your regular interval and how far to safely push it. They’ll likely suggest that you send another sample at the new suggested interval to confirm. They’ll also let you know the general health of your engine. Pretty cool service that I like to utilize either twice annually or before I’m about to dump a bunch of cash into my truck.

 

OP... stay with the 5K mile change interval, 5w30 full syn oil and a filter as recommended in the Owner's Manual Maintenance Schedule.

IMHO. Save your $$, don't bother with Blackstone. It'll cost $30+ for an analysis plus postage. Essentially, doubling your oil change costs.

 

Toyota specs their changed interval based on what GTMO is. So 5w-30 GTMO is conventional...hence why the 1GR 4.0 never had a 10k OCI.

Bottom line....Toyota doesn't want you putting around in stop and go city traffic for 10k miles on conventional oil.

If you have a 0w20 specd recommendation (which is always synthetic)....that's why they say you can use 5w20 but need to change it to 0w20 at the next change. Not all 5w20 is synthetic.

 

Driving style and situations are so unique. Personally, I think that proper warm up driving, full oil warm up, and then 10+ minutes at stable oil temp is far more important to getting longer life out of the oil (and the engine) than just counting miles.

 

I use synthetic but still change my oil and oil filter every 5k miles, along with a tire rotation, greasing the front and rear driveshafts and UCAs. In the summer/fall I change the air filter every 5k miles too because it's packed with dust from the trails.

 

I kindly disagree with Blackstone not being worth it. I'd say it's worth doing once every year or two to get a pulse on your motor's health. They also include postage now with their new oil shipping containers.

Blackstone making tons of money telling everyone “ your oils fine” stick to the what the owners manual says.

 

Agree on the Blackstone test as a good thing. Comparing the additional cost to the total oil change isn't really fair... I would compare it to the cost of replacing the bearings..

 

My thought is sure synthetic oil might last 10k miles but I don’t necessarily trust my filter lasting that long so I stick to 5k.

Yeah me too. I do synthetic every 5K but I put my oil through the ringer in that 5K with the summer heat living in Vegas and driving to Arizona a lot where it’s 20,000 degrees
