Hi All, how bad is this ? Detailer said the paint was super thin and came right off. Is this more prone to damage like rust going forward? My understanding the white paint has no clear coat.

Detailer said he would repaint the entire piece for me.

I would have Toyota paint it or a very reputable place and give them the bill. Thin is one thing, to much pressure was applied there or was left in the spot to long.

Some "detailers" should NEVER touch an angle grinder to polish vehicles. It takes skill to stay steady at π/radians!

I bought a used Toyota car that had a few areas burned but at least I hand wax it. Somebody chime in for OP.

Those body lines and hard edges will always have thin paint. It’s the responsibility of the detailer to avoid those areas for this exact reason.
A skilled and experienced detailer never would have even gotten close to that edge, except for finishing by hand.

Is it cosmetic or will it cause issues ?

Put the detailer on the hook for the bill. They screwed up. Paint doesn't just come right off like that. I am willing to bet they were using a rotary and not a DA.

Over a very long time it may cause issues, but it's mostly cosmetic, especially if you keep it sealed up with some wax or ceramic coat or something.

Although the damage is cosmetic, the detailer F'd up.

Have a real body shop of your choice handle the repair. Give the detailer the repair bill. Then find another detail shop or learn the DIY method.

Super white or blizzard white have been known issues for many years. Keep reading :hattip:
That is only one thread I linked... there are many. I have super white and paint has failed in multiple locations. Has nothing to do with washing or detailing the truck.

The detailer is correct in saying the paint was thin there - it's thin on every body line of every vehicle, not a Tacoma specific issue. This is the result of an inexperienced detailer and they should pay to fix their mistake. We need to exercise care when polishing high risk spots like that and clearly they did not. It might not cause structural issues but it will certainly affect the value of the vehicle.

Ummmmm......not a paint failure. Its a DETAILER failure.

I've got a white truck that is 15+years old. Paint is still fine. Sure, it has the usual chips, dings and scratches from life. But no paint failure.

Not disagreeing on paint issues. Look at OP’s original pic at the body line near headlight. The detailer left the machine polisher on the line too long causing that issue. The detailer effectively burned through the paint which would have happened on any vehicle with regardless of color. This particular case isn’t a super white issue, it’s a detailer issue.
