Same happened on my gray tundra with the clear coat....it sucks. Hopefully with the ceramic glass coat it won't happen this time on my tacoma.

Anytime you get ash on your vehicle, you should rinse it off very thoroughly and then wash your vehicle ASAP if there's any risk of rain or condensation. If it mixes with water and just sits there it can etch the paint.

There are dozens more news articles like this, as well as auto detailing forum posts.

That being said, I doubt this was the cause of your clear coat failure, though it may have contributed. That was a formulation issue at application, and I hope Toyota takes care of you, this is a big screwup on their part. This appears to be exactly the same kind of clear coat failure the Blazing Blue Pearl trucks were seeing.

For the rest of you yammering on constantly about sealants and coatings, stop. They have not, will not, and never will prevent clear coat failure.

I can verify this is a failed clear coat. It should last very long even if neglected. I am a professional

Barley cleaning it once every six months or less shouldn't even result in that much paint failure

I have my doubts too, but...
He's the third person I've asked with this type of paint failure. They've all said "yes". It apparently happened to OP in the span of a couple months. Without a catalyst, I have a hard time believing that can happen in a couple months.

Totally taking out of my butt here just based on speculative logic, but maybe the faulty clear coat provided 3+ years of protection until it reached its failure point, then the damage accumulated extremely quickly over a few months? Faulty clear coat was better than nothing for a long time until it no longer could protect from uv?

Not enough bandwidth on the internet to list.
I'm most certain you would be hard pressed to find an automobile in the western US that DIDN'T have ash on it this past year. Especially here in CA. I had a hands on experience with the identically destroyed finish on the Taco I drove. I studied it and ran my hand across for some time because I was so surprised to see it. It appeared to begin with the color coat. Like it just krinkled up under the clear coat and turned to shit. It was rough as 180 grit sandpaper and blended in to good paint as you got to the margins of the roof. A pillars were all just fine as was the hood. When I started really looking at the truck with a critical eye, I could see the passenger door and front right fender had been refinished as well as the right half of the hood. They blended from the fender to the center of the hood. The left half of the hood was original and showed no similar sign of deterioration. A lot of work had been done to the truck's front right corner and even though I was presented with a CarFax from the previous original owner that tracked "everything" to the present, there was no damage repair listed as there should have been. Obviously, don't trust CarFax.....it's BS.

I would offer the possibility that it may be production oriented. A glitch in the painting system on the roof? It's absolutely possible. The pristine '18 Ford Escape I traded in to buy my Taco a few months ago had a defect on the roof. Some Escapes have the panoramic roof. You could clearly see the paint was properly laid down on my roof and around all the edges but only fogged the huge real estate where the panoramic roof should have been....which I didn't have! Of course I didn't see it due to the roof rack rails and only noticed it the day after I brought it home and washed it. Ford agreed with my analysis on the mishap and the dealer had to shoot the entire roof. The last Ford I will ever own due to this and other upcoming issues.

Previous owner could have avoided insurance and paid a shop out of pocket to avoid reporting to CarFax. Also, it takes a few months for CarFax to update it's records. Having worked in car sales I could tell a story about a customer that was sold a car with a clean CarFax only to return a month or so later with a current CarFax stating repairs were done. Customer was SOL. BTW, I didn't sell the car. Morel of the story, don't buy used cars unless you're willing to take risks or know what to look for.

Dealer chalked it up to the strong windshield washer fluid i was using that i bought at shops while winter vacation trip snowmobiling in quebec....told me that stuff has a much higher concentration of methanol in it then we get here in the states. They don't even like the cheap blue stuff sold in many stores down here.

That is total bullshit about the methanol in the windshield washer fluid causing the damage. I have lived here all my life and never seen any damage by washer fluid on any of my vehicles. Bet you many other Canadians on this site would vouch for that too. Dealers are good at blaming it so they can get out of repairing it.

don;t need to , they fixed that sh*t for free back in April 2021. new hood, windshield , roof and paint job. thanks Toyota :)

I feel bad for ditching this good ol truck when my cyber gay truck comes in . I mean... full stainless steel body, no worry about pain at all. Also full SS under belly so no need to keep giving CBI my money for skid plates $$$.. also no need to give nitro gear my cash for a re-gear... or or.. no need to give walmart cash for 0w20 oil and filters (I would say transmission fluid and filter but i have no intention of ever swapping the trans fluid ever soooo that's a washhhh)

After it was fixed someone was ready to pay 40k cash for it. Unfortunate that POS rivian /cyber /f150 were all just pipe dreams at that time so couldn't let it go. I want my iPhone pickup truck damn it.

edit* im just sayin. When ppl ask why cyber truck over tacoma....Of all people, I can think of one good reason lol. The paint :(
