This happens maybe once a week, I start my tacoma I hear the engine fire up, right after I release the key from the start up position my engine shuts off. when I crank it again it fires up perfectly, anyone else's trucks do this? is it a big deal?? There is a small chance im not holding the key in the start up position then let it go before the engine has a chance ti fire all the way up but I doubt this.

Has it always done this or did it just start? How many miles?
My 14 has done that from time to time since it was brand new, like it stumbles on the first start sometimes. I'm not sure what causes it but it always starts fine the 2nd time so I never worried about it, 63k now and it's never not started.

Idk mine did it the day I bought it and I never thought anything of it, it does it occasionally but it's really sporadic. My best guess on mine is that from time to time the immobilizer doesn't read the key properly on the first go and shuts down the engine.
You could scan it and make sure there's no codes just in case something else is going on.

hey man thanks a lot for the help, one thing it might be is the anti theft system. When I first got the truck sometimes I noticed I couldn't crank the key, has this happened to you??? I had to put so much pressure just to get the key to the start position, I found out this was just part of the antitheft system when you turn the steering wheel while the truck was off the steering wheel would click then later you couldn't crank the key unless you put on a lot of force, this happened today before I cranked the key to start up my truck then the engine stopped. Maybe theres another way to turn off this security system, I just put 2 and 2 together because I have accidentally made my steering wheel click while getting out of my truck a couple times. Could this be it or should I look deeper into the problem I dont want this to get worse

When that happens pull on the steering wheel, this frees up the ignition.
Mine does it too. I forget what it’s called, but I’m pretty sure it’s a design feature.
    Steering lock maybe?

Mine has also started up and immediately died.
Has not don’t it in a while, maybe one time a year or so.
No idea why it does it.

Also, the OEM security system will allow the truck to crank.
But it will not start. It has nothing to do with the ignition.

okay thanks for the info, just a coincidence that my truck died after ignition immediately after the steering lock antitheft was accidentally engaged?

I have had this issue at random as well. Over the years I have replaced the fuel pump which was one of the issues, the VVTi solenoids, which were causing hard starting issues at random. The only thing I could think of that is actually doing it is a lack of fuel pressure to maintain due to the way that these trucks are designed.

Fuel is designed to be constant only at cranking and not at key on engine off. An external fuel pump one way check valve which is rigged into the lines should solve the issue as I suspect the issue stems from a lack of proper pressure needed to sustain the engine while running only at start up. I still haven't done it but I haven't had the issue in a while as well.
