Yea man it's a huge difference. When I'm drilling brackets I always do a pilot hole first.. usually an 1/8, even for 1/4 holes. It'll make your drill bits last longer and you will have to work less. Don't forget cutting fluid, hell even old motor oil is better than nothing

 

FTR smoke is normal with WD-40. You just don't want chatter, and don't keep going without letting it cool for a bit after you finish a hole. Low speed, high pressure.

 

Yeah ya gotta press really hard. It should take less than a minute to get a hole done.

 

At this point I think he's drilling holes with super dull bits. He needs some cutting oil (i use engine oil) and hard pressure with the bit turning slower than full bore

 

Don't run drill bits in an impact IMO, the hex shank ones are nice cause they don't slip in the drill chuck but don't actually use em in the impact, just a normal drill

 

that was when i was going in dry . I was taking breaks after itd start heating up tho, now im lubing it all up and will do it the right way

 

im at 3 holes in 2.5 ish hours. rough life for ya old boi

I have a can of tap magic sitting around that I like for cutting oil.

Turning slower is definitely something to keep in mind. Theres a perfect combo of pushing hard enough and turning hte bit at the right speed that will make the bit spit out very satisfying spirals of steel.

 

Theres precise speeds for materials and drill sizes but obviously in a hand drill you have to guess on speed. Helps to have a drill with a low and high gear.

 

i did notice that with the newer bits. They bit and dug fast, then like zane said i think i dulled em. Beginner's noob move

 

Little tip, when you see drill bits for a good price, buy em... also I don't buy the spendy ones I buy the cheapo dewalt black ones and they last a long time if you're not crazy on em. You can sharpen em too

 

ya I have a little oil can with engine oil in it that I use when drilling and other unimportant oiling uses

 

Don't get him started on sharpening drill bits

 

If the bits are dulled at this point there's no reason to go back again with the same and oil/wd right? wont start biting better? Guess ill need to swing by for the step bit

Yeah, that's more of an advanced skill for sure, especially when you do your own split tip

You can still do a redneck sharpen on the belt sander, but if you want to drill on both flutes and not have it drill over or undersized you need a drill gauge and a grinder.
