Possible permanent stains on my King shocks after detail shop

I agree that a shop who installs an item shouldn't damage that item on installation. But that's not what this thread was (initially) about. It's about a detailer using some soaps that happen to (appear to) interact less than ideally with aftermarket suspension equipment.

I don't know about you, but I've never heard of a detailer who focuses on "detailing" your suspension components unless you're intending to go to one of those car shows where they put mirrors under their cars.

So I don't think it's fair to berate them for something that's highly unusual to need to worry about in the first place. Unless the OP made specifically clear the suspension was part of the detailing process (or the suspension was on the list of things the detailer said he was doing), I don't think it's all that fair to complain about something so inconsequential. Take it as a lesson learned. If that's something that really concerns you, make sure you specify next time.

I remember many moons ago, I had new tires put on my truck. When I got home I realized they had put the weights on the outside of the wheels. Something that is completely aesthetic and did not affect performance in anyway. Despite that, I still went all Karen and complained about it. As it turns out that's SOP because it's easier and faster for them. If you want them put on the inside you need to ask.

 

Sorry for that situation, but that doesn't change the fact that damaging things is not okay.

That's absurd, and have never seen a shop do that before. Cool saves them 10 seconds...

3rd gen section has Friday threads 8 days a week I can't get over OP using the word "damage" to describe some discoloration.

Just a tiny reminder to anyone with problems as severe as the OP.... each day there are ~25,000 deaths globally due to hunger. 10,000 of those are children. A massive amount of the world's population would love to have any one of our bad days.

OP, your suspension is still going to be soft enough to navigate the mall parking lot without aggravating your already painfully swollen labia.

 

I'd hardly call it absurd, but this is the 3rd gen section where people are complaining about some slight discoloration on offroad shocks, so that makes sense.

I've seen it at multiple shops. I guess we go to different shops.

Lots of people don't care, and lot's more have hubcaps. 10 seconds per wheel adds up when you're doing hundreds or thousands of wheels.

I think the only way to get you back to where you want to be would be to either sell them and get a new set or have King dissemble them, re anodize the parts and re assemble. If I were going to the trouble of re anodizing them, I think I would go with other colors if, for nothing else, to have something different. Have the parts hard anodized or cerakoted. It would be more durable and a different color.
If you go the route of polishing them with metal polish you will find yourself in an endless cycle of polishing out the oxidation.
Instead of being pissed, maybe look at this as an opportunity to do something different.
If you do something to bring back the appearance, do it right even if it is a pain or costs. If you try to do an easy fix, you will likely regret it.

 

Nitric acid dip them.

We have all been this guy at one point. Nobody wants someone else messing up their stuff.

But a wear part is meant to get worn.

 

I’ve never gone “Karen” on anyone for anything ever I don't think I don’t think the OP is either. I believe he’s just asking for a fair service that he paid for. I also don’t disagree with most of what you say but there is a principle counterpoint to all said. As in, I think it goes without saying, for a detailer to not stain any part of the truck, suspension or otherwise when providing their service

The only sensible thing to do is have your shocks gold plated.

 

I had some rust on my rear 12" smoothies, from when my tire rubbed on them. I took some sandpaper, got rid of the rust, and sprayed some clear coat that i had laying around. Now no more rust. But now I have drips. Its under your truck and exposed to the elements, something is going to happen.

in the end, it all can be replaced, but it will likely happen again.

Its dark out obviously.. they look much better at the mall

 

The main body here, New England will eat it quickly even w/o the chemical damage. Threaded bodies are the worst.

 

That’s all aluminum brother but ya it will corrode but not oxidize and rust

 

King's have steel bodies.

I think Elka is about the only one using aluminum bodies.
