My knowledge of materials comes from real world everyday experience with my hands. Where does yours come from? Books? Calculators? Ok dude.
So sure, i suppose its a “guess”.

Yes, my foundation knowledge of materials started with books and specific Engineering classes.

Then materials became an integral part of my daily professional life for nearly 30 years.

Castings, stamping, injection molding, steel, aluminum, plastics, copper........ Products range from power tools to industrial compressors and cranes.

Yeah, that wheel is scrap. Its just not worth the risk at 70 mph of losing a wheel. Images of the Ford/Firestone incidents come to mind.

Sure, if your wheel, then run it. Frankly, I think its irresponsible to state the wheel is safe to use.

Engineers have to take classes on ethics too, and if you're a PE you essentially take an oath to uphold those standards...which is why we have a more conservative mindset when it comes to risk. The reality is that things we design could potentially kill people and there are ramifications if they do.
