For some reason you saying you'd take a spine shot brought back a memory for me. About 10 years ago when I could still pull my bow back, had a Mathews Switchback with 70 lb limbs and we needed some meat. I hadn't been in the stand but a few minutes and a small buck came walking down the trail I had walked to my stand. He was directly under me and I decided in between the shoulders was a good place so that's where I put it. He went down in the creek in front of me and was thrashing like crazy. Then he stood up, walked about 30 yards with the arrow sticking out of his back about 8" and stood there. I reached for my binos and looked back up and he was gone. I never found him and didn't find a drop of blood.

Looking back I should have shot him again when he was thrashing in the creek, hindsight is 20/20 though

There's a risk everytime you release an arrow (or bullet) as we all well know, and while I know a spine shot is far from perfect (and I'm gonna be 100% honest because I don't bs when it comes to hunting usually); that was a giant deer and I really just wanted him on the ground. The person that waits for the perfect shot every time is a far better hunter than myself. That being said, I do have limits; I'm not gonna sling an arrow for the sake of slinging an arrow. At the end of the day, if a person feels as tho they did the right thing, they probably did the right thing.
Either way; he was a no-show yesterday, but I did grunt at a small 8pt that was across a river....he came right to my tree. That was pretty cool.

I try to; I'm not suggesting that I'll take an ass shot or neck shot or a shot out of my comfort range...but the perfect broadside or slightly quartering away shot is not always an option. I'll take a straight down spine shot anytime. But I totally blew it this time:anonymous::anonymous:

Biggest deer I've ever taken was with a bow, I missed it twice standing broadside at 10 yards on 2 different days. Finally got him a week later :anonymous:

Put one on the ground last night. Searched for 3 hours no luck. Went back out this morning for an additional 4.5 hours of searching a grid and just blowing out every deer and pig on the south side of my property and still no luck. This was my first bow kill for a whitetail. He was just a spike but damnit

area wasn’t super conducive for recovery simply because it’s a field of chest high grass and honey locust trees. Great for bedding, not for hiking around

shot was at 8 yards from a ground blind, broadside, and double lungs. Frothy arrow and tons of blood but after about 15 yards the blood trail vanished.

And if you haven’t had the pleasure of an experience with a field of honey locust here you go. Yes those are thorns
