Yup, and its been going up ~ 5 cents on average every other week. I believe here in ventura county our average prices are greater than that of HAWAII.

In what way were his plugs shot? wet, blackened, electrode used up? Cheap or counterfeit NGK plugs will burn out early.

Lower octane does not burn dirtier, if hes using some cheap no brand gas that has little to no detergents mixed in or they have dirty storage tanks with crap filters at the gas station then that would cause it.

Ive replaced my plugs 3 times in 180k miles, the only reason I changed my plugs the last time was because I replaced the head gaskets and just did everything while it was apart.

They were fouled out, burned up and actually lower octane fuel does not burn as clean as higher octane, I’ve learned this especially in my boat as when you run a lower octane or quality fuel it actually will sputter when shutting it down and also is bad for the heads and plugs etc which is why race boats with built motors run 104 octane instead of 86 since it’s better quality, also be careful with which “additives” you use like STP which is garbage because that’s what will also stick like molasses to your carb, fuel injectors, plugs etc.. if you DO use an additive than spend the extra few bucks and use something if quality like Lucas as it really will make a difference.. I’ve rebuilt a couple V-8’s and you’d be surprised what lower octane and bad plugs does and how it’ll destroy your fuel consumption.. cheers!!

Oh.. and the plugs were the plugs that came in his truck stock so just to clarify NO they were not counterfeit NGK and they were from the factory. Sorry, forgot to include that.

That's not quite what's happening in the built motor, if its built to run race gas there's no way its going to run on any grade of pump gas. Its sputtering when shut down because its dieseling from the lower octane fuel self igniting, the engine is being damaged from detonation not dirty gas.

If they were original plugs then they were probably just their time. I stand by the fact that quality gasoline from a reputable source does not burn dirtier with a different octane rating.

I've literally used a variable compression engine to test different grades of gasoline and observed how they burn and how the engine reacts.

Lower octane fuel doesn’t burn dirtier. It’s possible that lower tier fuels with fewer detergents could leave an engine dirtier, but that would be true of lower tier 91 as much as from lower tier 85.

Mine knocks like crazy, especially when it's really hot out, on 87. I ran 91 (non-ethanol), and it ran like a champ. 87 was giving me 14-16MPG, and 91 was giving me 22-23MPG. I dropped down to 93 (E10), and kept the MPG, without any knock. Ran the 93 for a few weeks, then switched to 89. Still no knock, but it's in the 50-60°F range, but it does knock lightly under full throttle with 87 in it, and the MPG drops back down to 16ish.

Gotta do a tune-up on it, and I think I'll toss the copper core plugs and run Iridium plugs instead. It had Iridium when I got it, but they were badly worn, with a much tighter gap than they should have (there's metal build-up on the ground straps).

I’m wondering if your truck has carbon build up which is increasing the compression.. just a random thought.

    Octane threads are fun.

I've always used regular unleaded. I've driven hundreds of thousands of miles on multiple vehicles and no fuel related issues here. My '19 4Runner is closing in on 70K on the original spark plugs and runs just like new.

Your truck has some major issues if 91 makes a 50% fuel mileage difference

It was knocking pretty heavily. So yes, major issues. Knocked pretty bad at part throttle, and it got worse with full throttle. I also had an air filter that was pretty badly clogged up with dirt, pine needles, and other misc nature bits, which may have also skewed my fuel economy calculations, which has since been replaced. I can get 16-17 MPG with premium if I floor it everywhere, but I really don't like doing that, since I have a CDL, and in general, tickets cost way too much to risk it for me.

I've got a 50% bet on carbon buildup, and a 50% bet on weak fuel pump, clogged filter, or other fueling problem. Planning on a DW fuel pump upgrade in the future along with an under-hood filter kit, and delete the in-tank sock. This coming weekend, I'm going to run some seafoam through the engine, to see if I can help remove any carbon buildup if that's the core issue.

OH MY GOD!!! Capt Obvious!!? Is that REALLY you!!? WOW!! I’ve spoken of you so many times throughout my life (usually in smart ass ways) but never did I think I’d EVER have the chance to speak DIRECTLY to you and actually find out the REAL captain obvious is from Seattle!! Wow!! I’m just beside myself this morning and this’ll now be an EPIC day!! Thank you so much for joining Tacoma World so I could actually finally meet you. Once again I usually only speak of you when I’m truly being a smart ass but not this time. Wow!! Wait until I tell my family and friends I spoke to the REAL capt obvious and to know that we both drive Tacomas is just the icing on the cake!! Just incredible. Thank you!!

They did multiple runs changing timing, etc. to get the best run for each octane. So to answer your question, they tuned it to each fuel individually.

87 knocks, especially when its hot out. 91=no knocks. I run 91. The $ are not big enough (for me) to worry about. JMO.

And either they don't do what they claim to do or they leave some sort of deposition behind because their formulation and intermediaries suck (or both).

50 years ago STP was the name in aftermarket additives. Huge billboards proclaimed that Andy Granatelli recommends STP. We were like WTF is Andy Granatelli? One of our friends who bought all the car magazines found the answer. He was the head of STP.
