I also heard popping when I installed my top. They used to make aftermarket metal rail covers for the 2nd gens. I plan to buy some if I ever take the cap off. Until then, I'm not worried about the plastic pieces.

    Thank you for the photos!

No problem! Yeah the plastic top caps came off super easy. I pulled em off to seal the front corners. They would be very simple to replace if someone wanted to. From what I could tell there was nothing underneath the top cap where rubber squares were so that’s why it crushed. Probably also why people are bending their toppers before reaching the torque specs. There’s not a solid mounting surface. I’d recommend not using the manufacture torque specs just tighten it down till it starts to bend then back it off.

I’ll follow up, I mention shop install because I didn’t know where they belong since I didn’t install it myself. I have since removed the top a couple times so I’m sure the install was correct but those pieces fell out when I moved the cap and I didn’t know where they came from.

My bed rails / side cap pieces weren’t damaged, after installing the cap we lifted it to remove those and swap them out when I sold my factory trifold.

Torque values for those clamps never crossed my mind, just cinch them down to the point the cap isn’t shifting but before damage occurs.

Nice setup! I went with the KardKorr magnetic lights as well… highly recommended.

How is that propane tank secured? Just a ratchet strap? I have a mini also and been looking for a creative way to get it mounted.

Place the square rubber thingies back near where the bolt downs are and tighten them by hand...you can actually stick your fingers under and feel them, if you can stil slide them around you didn't tighten things down enough...worked for me (sometimes it doesn't hurt to ignore factory specs for torque and stuff, even if "professionally" installed).

Anyone know if the yakima A plates used on landing pads fit into the Smartcap channels?

not quite a crushed bed, but still unfortunate, I'd say that looks as simple as unlucky placement of the clamp with no metal supporting underneath that spot

Yeah I think it’s unavoidable, the plastic top caps extend beyond the metal underneath. I definitely would not torque it down again to what they say it’s plenty tight if you just snug up all the bolts and tighten the center one till it just starts to bow the metal. The center bolt never is super tight just by the design and overhang the metal on the topper just starts to bend.

The latches certainly suck for cold weather. They are quality, but poorly designed for ice. I greased the keyways with M-Pro 7 synthetic grease and oiled the surfaces that appeared to be freezing with some M-Pro 7 oil. We will see if that fixes the problem or if I will have to get the heat gun out a third time to get into the bed.

Well, the grease did not solve the issue with the locks freezing. It did help though. I think I need to run a heater in the bed so that everything will get warm enough to actually dry. I'm having 2 issues. One is the lock cylinder freezing, and a key either cannot be inserted or will not turn the lock. The other is the latch release mechanism freezes and will not opening when pressed.

I torqued the rsi smart cap to the bed per spec and the metal bent and there’s impressions on the body of my truck bed.

I too have just experienced the frozen latch issue. It has just started to get chilly in the northeast, and last week we had a few nights around 30F. I had an early job the next morning and the latches were frozen. I am currently working on a solution for the latches in the form of a removable cover. My observation is that water easily makes its way into the latches because of the angle of the sides of the cap. Once in there, it has nowhere to go. The cover I am working on I intend to 3D print. It has a gasket and will be held on with magnets. Magnets are in route and I should be able to test midweek. Protos have been printed and I like the way they look so far.
