Will the current market prices have a negative impact on Toyota Tacoma resale value?

If you pay over MSRP for a truck today and the market adjusts to normal won't the resale value of that at truck be negatively impacted?

I agree that's not happening anytime soon.

What are resale values based on MSRP vs what the vehicle is resold at? Or the price the vehicle originally sold for, vs the resale price?

Resale value is purely market driven. As we can see the market is stupid right now. As far as calculations the industry makes I have no idea

If people are stupid enough to pay those prices this wont stop. I just bought a new CX5 and could not believe the jacked up prices dealers were trying to pass off on me for a used CX5 thinking I would buy that instead when I could not find a new one. There are 29 dealerships in Ohio that sell Mazda's and a dozen more with in 100 miles of me in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. I played them all for 3 weeks and got what I wanted at the price I wanted to pay. I also can not believe that 3 of my neighbors have come up to me wanting to buy my 13 Sienna with 66000 miles on it because I just bought a new car and still have the one its replacing. The Sienna is not for sale nor is my 17 Tacoma with 30000 miles. At 62 I doubt I will be needing to buy anymore new cars with the choices I have now.

The reality is the cost of production of new has already and will sharply increase. Trucks are literally tons of steel, and steel has doubled in price.
*Add in inflation of likely every single part
    *Increase in labor cost
    *Decrease in labor availability
*Increase in lead time on everything (a friend in auto production says the worst hasn't hit yet).
*Increase in safety and health spending for employers

I personally would rather pay $40k for a nearly new truck, than $60k for the same truck new.

It's like that in many industries, a while back I watched a documentary on precious metals and gems. Basically those can be found in many places, but the market is manipulated in such a way that the appear scarce...now the prices can be allowed to skyrocket...

Which brings up the thought... What do the lenders think about giving a loan to someone dumb enough to pay these prices on a vehicle that will eventually take a very steep dive in depreciation due to the market leveling out. If lenders wouldn't loan on overpriced rigs they wouldn't be selling them at inflated prices.

I wonder where those calculations come from? Buy low sell high is a simple concept, it feels good just saying it. I wonder if resale value is market price vs market price. Both of those numbers fluctuate and it would seem difficult to set a real base line between the two.

If I get a good deal on a vehicle, something under MSRP. If that vehicle is a Tacoma which holds it's value in any market. Then I trade that vehicle in, but the market hasn't fluctuated much if any. I still get a good resale value, but I got a good price when I initially bought the vehicle new. My resale price is negatively impacted because I didn't pay the market value for the new vehicle.

I don't think this would be enough to say that getting a good price on a new vehicle, isn't a good thing.

Agreed, I was f*cked at the dealer paying $3k over MSRP for an in stock 2021. I couldn't find a long bed anywhere and had to get a vehicle for work. 2 years ago I would have bought this truck for $2k under MSRP or so. Bad timing for me.

As others here have alluded to, of course, these prices are insane. But also, they will sit there of nobody is willing to pay the price, and believe it or not, I guess it looks like some people are willing to pay these insane prices. I have a 2019 TRD Sport, and recently turned down an offer of $50,000 for it. It has 42,000 miles and is fairly heavily customized. Still though, I would definitely get my money back for the truck and everything I have done to it, but the problem is, WHAT would I do then? There are no new vehicles available really, or at the very least, not much in the way of choice, so I am just happy to have bought when I did. And the prices you showed, I have also seen here in the Oakland CA area, which is a couple of hours south of Roseville CA where you shot your pics. When I recently took my truck in for the rear upper stoplight recall, I also walked around their lot and it had no new vehicles, only used ones. When you see 2017 vehicles for over $42000 sitting in the showroom, that my friends, is how I define 'obscenity'!

I have to beg to differ on production and prices of metals or parts is driving this. Toyota has not raised their prices to equivalent for what the dealers are charging. This is truly dealers marking up to make a profit. When you go on to Toyotas website to build and price it gives you the MSRP for that truck and by all means you should know that Invoice is way under.

Toyota even says that dealers set their own price. Now with everything going on I can see a dealership needing to make up for lost revenue if they truly are having a hard time to sell vehicles but this isn’t the case. They can’t keep them on the lots. I would understand if they said MSRP or walk but having anything above $3k market adjustment is still insane. If you “lost” that much money there were programs in place to recoup that.

I was recently looking at this as there was a debate on another thread about price gouging. I say it is and others say it isn’t but after a little time of researching, the FTC (I thought it would be the State) is aware and doing their due diligence on pricing. So at some point in time they will have their day to argue why they need to charge $5k-$50k markup and explain it. If not then their little make money quick scheme isn’t going to pay off. Only issue they have is that it isn’t Toyota Corp that is doing this, it’s the dealers which are all separate entities.

This is retarded. No one is forcing anyone to buy a vehicle. Dont like the price? Dont buy.

Trouble is as long as you have a decent credit history they want you to spend more. Their not interested in what you buy as long as they think your good for it.
