I took my 5 lug 4 cylinder manual trans access cab in to the dealer for the every 5K mile oil change, and asked them to also so a front end alignment. My service advisor told me the mechanic said he couldn't do it because I added a rear sway bar, 18" X-Runner wheels and too much rust, then he suggested a nearby tire shop he said he takes his vehicles to (I like and trust my service advisor, and he's done well by me for years). I went to the tire shop suggested, they also said too much rust, squirted some penetrating oil on all the parts and said to come back in a couple of weeks (no charge).

Is it unusual for a Tacoma less than 8 years old to have all the front end suspension components so badly rusted out? I know there was previously a frame recall due to rust, but didn't think that applied to my model year. I live about a mile from the ocean, but my previous 1988 Toyota truck never had corrosion this bad after 25+ years. Any suggestions on what I should do? One of my friends is the parts and service manager at another Toyota dealer in the area and he said he'd check to see if this is a known problem, but don't remember seeing anything like this posted here before

Show pics of the frame around the cat areas , that is the area you might notice a hole. If it's bad enough you could be eligible for a new frame and a bunch of other components. Good luck

Trade it in on a new truck, seriously. It's a bit too far gone and not cost effective to start replacing all the suspension, brake and frame components. On the next truck, spray a fluid film or rust inhibitor underneath to help prevent this from happening again.

With the price or scrap being up higher I’d trade it in or scrap it, and find a new one.

It's a street truck, never driven offroad or on the beach. The rest of the frame looks OK

The truck spent its entire life in Malibu?

My 2014. You got a lot of rust. I run on the beach once a year, and they salt the roads around here, but I rinse often.

You will probably be eligible to get a new frame soon. But that’s still a ridiculous amount of rust on the suspension pieces and is alarming even if you get a new frame. What state are you in?

Correct. Residential neighborhood. My old 1988 Toyota had a lot of body rust, but nothing like this in terms of suspension component rust. There's no rust on the rest of the truck

I'm the original owner, so I know it wasn't abused before I bought it, and I'm not looking to replace the truck

That's wild. Sorry you are dealing with this now. This is the sort of rust you see on trucks up in the rust belt.. not California.

I'm in sunny southern California, so no snow, no road salt, only occasional rain. When I go to the beach, I keep salt water far away from my truck, so this would be just from the air

That didnt all happen since your last 5k oil change.

Seems your trusted team should have been giving you a heads up a while ago.

Wow. I’d be taking a look at the frame.
Like others said, crawl under and look around the cat on the driver’s side. That where it usually rust through first.

Also check the lower rails for delimitation.

Yeah, I was a bit pissed, and my service advisor was a bit embarrassed. Since it's always been serviced at a Toyota dealership, I'm hoping Toyota steps in at some point

My 2015 looks at least that bad. Vermont truck, salt in winter, chloride liquid in summer to keep the dust down. I've seen vehicals not pass safety inspection well before the last payment.

Southern California truck, no snow, no road salt, not much rain, so just the environment that every other pristine So Cal vehicle lives in. I'd understand if I lived somewhere they salted the roads, but no other noticeable rust on my truck
