Well, the keyway is made. To say that this old spindle isn't true anymore is an understatement...

Like could have done about as good with a right angle grinder and cut off wheel sloppy ?
Yeah, should have mentioned to tighten the Y axis real good and snug the knee up helps too. You think spindle bearings are shot? Repairs to that equipment aren't that difficult and right up your alley so to speak.

Why you never went into Gunsmithing with the skill you have for working on little small parts is curious.

 

If I had known what I wanted to do when I got out of high school I may have pursued it

 

If I had one, one neighbor if they looked just the right direction could see it .

Otherwise They would need to drive down a trail that passes for a drive way

The down side the Pizza delivery person gets a $20.00 tip and stated no way will I come here in the dark.

 

Shit, knowing what I wanted to do may have kept me in high school. Not knowing made everything seem like a waste of time. I would have been thrilled for something like an apprenticeship when I was 16, at least you're DOING something then.

 

Halfway back together. Gotta get a new belt since the old one was shredded on the inside. New shaft and bearings installed. What a fun job!

I just wanted out of school, got out early my junior and senior year and worked at a landscape nursery. 2 days out of school and I was working at a heating and air place for 2 years, friend called me and ask if I wanted a job in a machine shop. 26+ years later and I’m still here

 

Have to second that good job comment. And I bet it was fun, and it's nice to learn new skills, rewarding.
Just FYI, there are companies out there that could send someone out to repair those older machine shop equipment. You could probably get operating and maintenance manuals online and do much of it yourself. Or pester the owners to upgrade the shop for you. I think you've shown the ambition and skill to do it...so why not? Looked back at the picture of the mill; would they at least spend the money and get you a heavy duty cart for that 4 jaw chuck and face plates for the lathe? Or build one.

 

I pondered a machinist job in high school but after high school I went straight to work. Painting, toilet partition installer, roofing, tree trimming, gas station manager, window shutter factory, not in that order but those and a few others...landscape a little,
In 1993 started at a machine shop, pretty much been in this since then, less a couple of years as a millwright, a year production operator.
My idea of machinist in HS was building race car engines in a clean room environment

 

Our school job conselor went to the crazy house so she wasnt much help. No real opportunities where i grew up so Air Force took me in. I prob would have enjoyed other jobs but no money for college and no money period put a throttle on that

 

Yeah, I've provided for myself and been on my own since between junior and senior year. Looking back, the military would have been a good option.

Speaking of jobs, not counting a paper route, I've had three - 1) making decals for semis, race cars, air planes, etc., 2) CAD for an electrical engineer and 3) whatever they throw at me now. I hit my 10 year anniversary on Sunday. I'll probably bring in cookies.

Speaking of high school, my oldest that's taking AP chemistry said that they were starting on a bit of theoretical physics because they know how many electrons and stuff make up various elements but they don't know where those electrons are at any given point in time. I'm sure glad he's enjoying it because he completely loses me when he's talking about it!
