Thanks for the whole map, Jim. I could only capture half of it (with detail) and then bring the two close together.

Nov 18 (race start) is fast approaching! Wild that this very first off-road race (off highway is more accurate) began with the first 1000 in Baja California in 1967!

Only one year there was no 1000, in 1974.

The details have been blurred in subsequent writings, but I was very much tuned in... SCORE had just run their first Baja race, the July 1974 Baja Internacional (eventually renamed Baja 500 and moved to June) and the success was overwhelming. I was at that race at Mike's Sky Rancho.

Mickey Thompson (president of SCORE) stated there just was not sufficient time to put together a 1000 mile race that year following the July race. Some writers have claimed it was due to gasoline issues...

SCORE's invitation by Mexican officials to run all races in Baja California was an experiment after the failures made by the Baja Sports Committee (BSC) at the 1973 Baja 1000, when winning racers didn't get paid; and 1974 Baja 500 when almost nobody showed up! I was at the '73 1000, my first off road race to watch.

BSC was created by Mexico to take over the successful Baja races established by NORRA, following NORRA's 1973 Baja 500.
NORRA out, BSC in... BSC blew it, SCORE in.

The first SCORE Baja 1000 was in 1975, and for the first time, the 1000 was a loop race that started and ended in Ensenada. I was there and watched from two locations, Valle de Trinidad on the southbound leg and at the sulfur mine near San Felipe on the northbound leg.

23 Hours Onboard with Robby Gordon at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000

FYI there are speed restrictions for the racers -- you will see one following the start in Ensenada -- paved roads generally have a speed restriction of 60 mph. There are also speed restrictions on some roads thru small towns.

On the co-driver's GPS, the number in the upper left is their ground speed.

Enjoy this nicely made video produced by Desert Assassins (Cameron Steele) and edited by Jimmy Lee Cook... Cameron (#16) finished in 3rd place and his team's second truck (#14) finished in 10th place: https://youtu.be/2iZNgFh7dzk
