Yeah.....they are both 4 liter 60° V6s....but there's quite a big difference internally between the single and dual VVT-i 1GRs.

He's referring to the 1GR engines

It’s pretty much the same engine as the 05-15 Tacoma’s but with variable valve timing. Yes my 2021 4Runner calls for 0w20. Same as my 2013 Tacoma. All new trucks seem to get 0w20 now. Interesting my local Toyota dealer is putting 75w140 on rear differential of all Toyota trucks. I just drained an filled mine with valvoline 75w90 synthetic- those bags are awesome I didn’t even have to drop the spare tire

Ha it doesn’t matter much they all take 0w20 these days. At 10k intervals per Toyota but I can’t I’m right mind take it out that long. I’ve owned a few yotas including a 88 4Runner and 92 mr2

The single VVTi 1GR was never spec'd for 0w20.....the dual VVTi is. But it was developed much later.

Toyota bases the OCI on whatever GTMO is. GTMO 5w30 is conventional....hence the 5k interval on the single VVTi.

I think that was with the 2010 redesign so 11 year ago. Of course the 08 4Runner I used to own felt just as torquey as my 21 does. The 21 is definitely heavier. Too bad they still don’t use the 4.0 in the Tacoma

The block is pretty much the same.
Tacoma uses a 10:1 compression ratio.
    The 4Runner is 10.4:1
Both have VVTi, however the 4Runner has dual VVTi (exhaust)

On an interesting note, the “older” 1GR makes more torque lower in the RPM range.
While the newer makes about 30 HP more HP higher in the RPM range.

I agree here, I think they should have held off on the 3.5.
But I’m sure there were reason, I just just don’t know what they were?

    I’m not bashing the 3.5. It’s a good engine.
    But I don’t see what the 3.5 does that the 4.0 doesn’t?
IIRC, they make close to the same power, you just have to run the 3.5 a little harder (more rpm to achieve same power).

i do this with my 2k taco over 200k miles. generally, the monthly interval is to help people remember, who don't pay attention to mileage, when to change the oil. additionally, oil technologies, not only synthetic techs but also API standards and filter media qualities, are so much better than 2 decades ago. you CAN go 10k miles. I wouldn't judge. if anything, consider switching to 0w16 oil unless you live in or near 0°C climates. then stick to 0w20

10k mile changes with Kirkland synthetic 5w30 and i run a Mobil 1 20k filter to 20k or 1year. Run 20-24k a year. When I run more on unsurfaced roads and trails it’s 5k on oil and filter.

I never fault those for asking a question that they don't know the answer to. Even if it has been answered a few hundred times. How are most people going to know that that's the case. Plus, not everyone is tech savvy to find exactly what they are looking for It may be a simple answer for some, but not for everyone.
Hence, l don't care if a question is asked repeatedly. As long as it helps that person, I'm okay with that.

Isn't that why the forum is here in the first place? To help those who don't know, or aren't sure?
