Does it help gas mileage wise to change shift points on a lifted tacoma? My shift points are awful w/ a 6” lift unless I put into manual mode and shift myself. Anyone know if this helps and if so who do you go to to even do this?

Is it worth doing through how well does it help gas mileage?

You lift has nothing to do with the shift point of the transmission.

What are your wheels and tires?

20” Wheels & 35s what i’m saying though is like it’s programmed shift points are for stock wheels and tires you add big wheels and tires and it doesn’t want to shift all the way up on the highway because your speed is not enough. I’ve literally experienced it going 70mph on 5 grand not shifting at all. Not sure if a tuner or what is needed to take care of this.

shift point change will not help. Your shift points are awful because of tire size. Re-gearing could help shift points but not mpgs. Nothing helps a lifted truck running big ol tires with respect to mpg. You pay to play right?

So a tune in general is not going to help correct? Yeah I figured rehearing it would probably be an option not sure if I want to go through that hassle but it would prob help tremendously!

A tune will most certainly help with the AT shift points as the ECU programming is based on torque request. The larger wheels and tires, lift (aero drag), and weight mess with the torque calculations. I have tuned folks on 35s and they are happy with the outcomes.

Do you think the truck needs regeared or will I be fine with just a tune? Also which tune do you recommend and who usually does them?

Yeah. I think the AT on 5.29s (close to the MTs on 4.30s) is the right gearing for us. But, a tune is a good place to start.

I flash unedited or lightly edited vF tunes. Reach out to someone local to you for it unless you want to grab the software and go at it. I have a Feelers thread with a list of folks around the country. See below.

I just use my pedal commander and it's fine. Gears reduce the strain on the drive train; transmission to rear end. These trucks have more than enough torque to pull 35" tires. My 2018 35" tires was getting 16.8 MPG. My 2021 with 33" tires only gets 14.7 MPG. Go figure?! LMAO!

You think the Pedal Commander is the best option to go with then? That specific one over the others or even a shop tune?

I’m not sure? All I can say is that it works good for me. I never tried a tune, because it would void the warranty on my electronics of the truck. The pedal commander is a plug and play unit and can be easily removed if I ever need to take it in for any issues.

A PedalCommander addresses one aspect of the issues that the Taco has with the Stock tune. A vF Tune addresses hundreds of parameters and has a greater overall effect.

Where would I find someone that does a VF tune though? I live in very rural area and I have no clue where to start is there a company or certain website to find people that do it?
