During these times it's all about future business from service and accessories. If you're out of state you're one and done and the dealership won't get any future business from you. There's quite a few news articles about this since the shortage started.

I was not; however, the finance manager from the dealer I purchased mine in was surprised that I was from out of state and told me they had stopped selling to out-of-state buyers. My sales person hadn't heard that before when I asked him afterwards.

VA got me too. Ohio doesn't have Sales Tax on cars, so when I went to title it in Virginia, I got to pay a "use tax" of ~$3000.

The reasons of the dealer's decision is of no consequence.

    The fundamental reason is......

A business has the right to refuse service to any customer.

Except when that refusal violates a protected class (race, religion, gender, etc). Short of that yes, they can sell to whoever they want.

Dealers in SOCAL were total PITA. I went around and around with them. They said the truck I wanted was in my "area" but they would not tell me where. I had to figure it out on my own since they could not sell it to me. I ended up "ordering" my truck from Grants Pass Toyota in Oregon. They were awesome to deal with. I flew up there and drove it back home. I will never buy a new vehicle from any of my local dealers ever again based on principle. Jack wagons.

Almost.....race, religion, gender, etc can be refused due to behavior

If race, religion, gender, etc is the only reason, then no they can not refuse.

Example: Many restaurants have the No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service sign on the door. They can refuse service if you enter the business without pants.

Service Dogs and Handler can be refused service if the dog is urinating, defecating, uncontrolled or threatening other customers.

Agreed. At that point the main reason for refusal is the behavior, not the protected class, so you are good.

I have a Toyota dealer in town but in March of 2020 went with a dealership 2 hours away in South Dakota because they had a better price. They even drove it to my house and signed the paperwork in my kitchen.

Six months later we bought my wife's Highlander in Minneapolis. All without issue.

The local dealer has done all the maintenance on both vehicles.

I bought my 2020 Pro sight unseen from a dealer in Kansas and had it shipped to my door in Oklahoma. No problems (other than they miscalculated the registration tax and got me a refund), just a couple phone calls, emails, and scanning of ID's. Decent folk, Hendrick Toyota.

When I was looking to buy in summer 2020. The local dealer in my town I didn't get on very well with and the other one not so far away never seemed to have what I was looking for. I ended up emailing a few sales managers at dealers in PA and Maryland that were 20 to 50 miles away. Ended up with my best deal at Bill Kidd Toyota in Timonium MD and I live in PA. They took care of all the paperwork and everything they do PA sales often enough. It was my first band new vehicle purchase too. I think I did ok. Just didn't do it the traditional way. Most of the dealing was done over phone and email. It was actually easier than buying my last used car.

Ohio definitely has sales tax on cars. My guess is they just didn't collect it because you were an out of state buyer and the vehicle was never titled or registered in Ohio.

Dealers make money off selling their specific brand of extra crap. It's not good to them if they can't offer it to you. TBH, they are all shady and if they are willing to pass on a sale for whatever reason, they are super shady. Avoid them in the future. And let us know EXACTLY what dealer it was, please.

Don't know where you are... But the dealer I bought my truck from recently said they have tons of people come from out of state to buy from them, including repeat buyers doing it. If you want the recommendation from a stranger on TW, I wouldn't hesitate. I'm local to them, but did everything through email and phone with the online sales guy. Literally no gimmicks, tricks, last second changes, not a penny different in the final price vs what they said. Finance guy was cool too. I paid under invoice for all my past Toyotas over the years. They were so straightforward I still left there completely happy paying today's prices. They were also by far the lowest markup in the region that I could find.

    Bill Kidd's Toyota, Cockeysville MD.

They sold me my truck also. Pretty much the same experience with them and we did most of the deal over email and phone. They really worked to find me the truck I wanted too. It was my first time buying a new vehicle and I always hated dealerships I bought from in the past but it was good with them. I would definitely buy from them next time.
