Awesome pics. Headed to Moab in a month and thinking about how I'll get over to the San Juans for fall colors. Looks like this could be a fun route with some aspens on its own.

trying to figure out how late in the season you can do this drive. anyone have any idea? thinking mid-October, solo. I'd bring a chainsaw for the wood in the road, but more thinking how much snow could be on the route at that time if any (I'm from the PNW so I have no idea)

OK I found this on the website for the trail:

Does the Rimrocker trail get snow is it possible to due it in late November/December. How long would the trail take on a two up motorcycle

Hi Doug, Portions of the trail do get snow but it’s unusual to have so much snow that it is impassable. I would keep an eye on the weather in the next couple of weeks and then make a decision. Portions of the trail on the UT side are pretty rough and bumpy, and I’m not sure how fast you’d be traveling. Typically in a 4WD vehicle the trail takes a long day. It is 160 miles after all!
So I'm thinking I will go week of October 12th...

The sections that have big trees that would stop a Tacoma are wide graded roads that are well maintained

Yeah this looks like a pretty fun/easy road if I'm going down solo (well, with my dog but he will likely not be of much help if anything goes wrong)...which as it stands right now is the case.

That should be doable provided a huge storm doesn't roll in the week before or while you're on it. Just start watching the forecast in late Sept and keep an eye on it till your trip. It'll likely be doable, but it's non inconceivable a big one could close it

yeah that sounds good. i'll probably be down in the area unless i think of something better and will give'r a rip if the weather permits. Kind of like people planning their climb of Mt Rainier or Mt Hood a year in advance. If you go regardless of what the weather is doing because you only have that time off....you're gonna have a bad time.

Exactly how Mt. Hood manages to kill so many people... glad you're smart about it. That's on the border of fall color season so could get some good aspens there or a little more south in Colorado. I'll be leaving the area on the 9th or so and hoping to catch some good colors.

Thanks to those that posted here. We drove most of the RR heading east, it was amazing and should not be missed. Dark skies, and empty trails in August. Saw 1 other on first day and about 5 on second day. Watch the f*ck out for logging truck between Naturita and Montrose. We encountered an insane driver, almost pushed us off a ledge, I was doing about 35mph on a gravel road, with my cuz about 100 yards behind in my dust. The truck pushed me out of the way and my cuz landed in a ditch as the truck emerged out of the dust at the last second. Bad stuff, but otherwise, amazing!!!
Yes, the trailer was fine, 4" lift, offroad hitch, AT Tires.
