What is this strange looking wire config on my new '22?

This is right in front of the battery. Are there multiple wires and they use one? Just looks goofy on a new truck, wondering what it goes to. Here it is from 2 angles. Or maybe the red wire has been cut out of a its insulation, so the insulation is what looks like a cut/unused wire?

    No biggy, just curious.

Wiring harnesses are typically outsourced to small operations using a lot of unskilled labour. You get a mixed bag of tape and Ty-wraps and wiring methods. As long as the truck works, pay it no mind.

That little piece of handiwork always bugged me, it’s exactly the same on my ‘19.

My 16 is similar. Maybe other config/options use the other side of that connector?

Here's my guess. The mesh is for protection from sharp edges. The picture is blurry, but the "extra" piece inside the mesh may be a stiffener to help the assembly worker with routing the wire. The wire may need to pass through a hole or something where the protection and the extra rigidity is needed to help with the installation.

Sometimes a piece of solid plastic is used to give rigidity, so this does look odd.

Same here. It looks half-assed. I haven't tried to follow the wire but from the diagrams, it looks like connector EG1 which connects between the starter relay (ST Relay) in the under hood fuse box and the starter. The location, connector and wire color, and number of pins/wires match EG1. If unplugging it prevents the starter from running, that would confirm, but I wouldn't experiment on MY Taco:rofl:.

Our '21 Pro has the same connector. BUT, there's so much odd/bizarre/weird/strange stuff under that hood that I have chosen to just ignore it. Obviously, Toyota has been building Tacoma harnesses that way for quite a while, so there must be a valid reason for that--we just have no clue what it could be.
