Have you tried the Internet Crimes Complaint Center (iC3)? https://www.ic3.gov/

They are a part of the FBI. About 15 years ago I was in a similar situation. I paid for an item, douche canoe never sent it. I was recommended to file a complaint to the iC3. After a few months of communicating with law enforcement, I eventually got my money back. It’s an option.

I would spend the few bucks and send him certified letter politely asking for money one last time. 2 reasons, if and when you go to court or the police, he can't claimed he lost his phone/changed his email could not get a hold of you, etc (I watched Judge Mathis alot during the pandemic). And if he refuses it, come court time all the more ammo in your pocket that he is in wrong. And if you can get a lawyer friend to send it from his law office, even better.

Discount Tire HR called me once I sent them a detailed email documenting everything and they confirmed he did indeed work there, but not since November of 2020. So his post in February of 2021 claiming to be an employee is a lie. They are forwarding the email to the NC region to make them aware of this guy and any scheme he may have doing solo or with another employee.

Maybe he's just a scammer dick. Maybe he went broke from his old lady leaving him and your money was the last on earth. Maybe he's dead. Maybe he's one of the 8.2 billion untrustable people on the interwebz. Write it off on your taxes and move on perhaps. Chalk it up to a very costly learning lesson. College costs more....just sayin....

Wait what part of the tax code lets you "write off" money you got scammed out of on the internet? Something tells me IRS would be more likely to audit you than reduce your taxable income lol

Has nothing to do with internet. A good accountant (not those H&R Block clowns) can file a loss if you can document that you spent money on something you never received. It's usually considered a "loss" and will come right off the top if you owe money. If you get a return, you may not get it back. You may also be able to claim it on your homeowner's insurance, if you own a home, and depending on which state you live in.

If you recover via reduced taxes or by insurance, then you may be waiving your right to recover via legal means.

    You can not collect twice.

I'd chase the legal path first.

I forgot to mention, always get a written or typed receipt with the seller's signature on it. Documentation is everything in today's world. If you don't use trusted 3rd party transaction companies such as Paypal, you're kind of up a creek.

Correct. I was stating that if you could not document the transaction for your accountant, you may be able to persue it through homeowner's insurance. Not both. Double dipping will get you in trouble down the road.

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
