Yeah I guess my point was we only got two punctures in the whole trip and it was just bad luck they both happened on the same day. I feel like we stopped at a cattle station the next day and got them fixed anyway but at the same time we probably only saw one other vehicle that whole week so would have been SOL without the second spare.

This was Western Australia in the late 80's/early 90's and there were a lot of guys who had onboard air even then. My dad used to laugh at them because we had fat tires so he didn't really feel the need to air down for sand which was where we did most of our wheeling. Guess he wouldn't have been laughing if we'd have gotten a third puncture that day :p

I carry the factory spare, a plug kit and a 12v compressor.

My gf carries 2 spares in her Mazda 5. The second one is so she “won’t have to use the donut”

I carry 1 spare and a plug kit

Like all gear what and how much is dependent on the trip. When I go alone I do take two and I always have a good flat kit.

Why? Well I have damaged a rim and torn a sidewall on one trip. I really don’t want to either walk out or wait for help.

Folks had OBA long before that. Heck, I was carrying a spark plug compressor in the 80’s. Those had been around for decades already.

    This and that...
The Dempster Highway is notorious for eating tires. One videos I watch the road ate 3 of a truck's tires, although the man admitted they were not quality and went against his better judgement when he bought them. Two spares used to be recommended out there back in the day but from what Ive read its become better. Looking to drive this when the borders open again.

Early 1990s i was dinking around in my t4r with 2 friends and 2 dogs up around Brokentop.
3 flat tires, we made it back allmost to town, 5 mile walk home...

I carried 2 spares for about a decade when ever i went out solo.
Never did get another flat the whole time i carried 2.

Canned air/patch from then still floating around in the current t4r.
I just run tire plugs, air patch can and little compressor now.

Last set of tires were nail collectors.
3 in one tire and 1 in each of the others.
    Hankook Dynapros 265/75/r16.

Mountain or course? Because your home has to be pretty dope if it’s 5 miles from the mountain.

Made it back to 5 miles from home.
Ran on a near flat tire till it became unsafe.
Then started walking...no cell phone back then.

No houses out there then , but houses out there now. Solid, packed in every square inch...where we made it to. Was just fields and forest.

    And just for transperancy...
    Ripped sidewall then added spare.
Punchured and plugged the next flat.
Then the spare tire went flat on the way back.
    ...and we are walking.

Was like one of those jinxed trips... if you have had them you know what i mean.

The guy at the tire shop said 4 was the max he had seen.

I want to say BFG of Cooper MT...not really sure...foggy memory.

The road may be better now, but they used to recommend carrying 2 spares driving the Dalton Hwy in Alaska. Statistically you could count on 1.5 flats on the 400+ mile trip. Meaning half the people would need both spares.

I could see it for a lot of hard core off road trips. But not for what I do.

L.A. to Alaska in ‘83 in an ‘82 CJ-8. Two spares. Fixed half a dozen or so flats. And replaced three of five tires due to damage.

Best darned trip my wife and I ever took. I understand a Prius could do it today.

They've literally been in every parts store for the last 35 years, at least. I've had one in every vehicle I've owned.

Good thread. Most of what I do is off road for access to other things (caving, climbing, canyons, hunting) in remote parts of the west (mainly Nevada/Utah). Not so much the recreational wheeling that does look like fun. I usually go solo or with one or maybe 2 others in the cab with me. I have a hi-lift, plug kits, OBA, and full-sized spare that go with me everywhere.

So, to me - the answer for "Run a second spare?" is - it depends...some roads made from mine spoil are like driving over razors (thank goodness for my KO2s). I am considering it for some trips but am limited on space/don't want to carry the weight etc.

I see two spares on dessert running rigs. I just carry one spare and one of those tire repair kits where you patch it with a tee handle.

I was wheeling last weekend and saw a tacoma with 4 tires and wheels in the back of the bed. I am pretty sure he took off his ko2s and stock whees to put on another set of k02s and bead lock wheel’s.
