I am installing an OEM Toyota tailgate lock kit (part PK3B6-35JS0) in my 2021 Tacoma SR5. All the instructions and install videos I can find show the camera wire running along the passenger side of the truck and is used to zip tie the tailgate lock harness to it. My camera wire runs along the drivers side so I do not have a wire harness I can zip tie the tailgate lock wire to. Has anyone else installed the tailgate lock in the 2021 SR5? If so can you share how you routed and secured the wiring harness?

    Thanks

Yes. There's another thread on it if you search. The short story is that the kit I'd designed for TRD and above teim levels, not the SR5 and below. If you look, there are actually enough holes in the frame to attach the harness. Use the stainless wire ties where the harness is close to the exhaust. I bought some extra stainless wire ties to makes sure the harness didn't get near the exhaust.

You may want to search through the "What have you done to your Third Gen today?" thread for more information.

I found this video showing the install from the driver's side.

You said you have a camera wire running alongside the driver's side but no harness. Sounds like you need to use the camera wire routing that goes to your tailgate, as the harness. The camera wire should be wrapped in protective plastic harness with aluminum covering around the exhaust area (unless the exhaust is routed on the passenger side. In this case, you shouldn't have aluminum covering since you're route is not near the exhaust system.

Toyota recommends the drivers side if you look at their install PDF. (Well the one from 2017 did). Someone here did it years ago along the passenger side because they wired it to the passenger door lock wiring and that simply took off, hence all the YouTube videos. Mine is wired along the drivers side, along with the cargo lights. It’s a way better run for the wiring due to connecting it to the OEM harness as you stated. You can also wire it to either passenger or drivers door lock if you go down the drivers side.

Is this for the loud one or the updated one you see on R4T?

Here it is on my 17, no passenger side harness, i just ran it accross the top and used the metal zip ties to attach to frame.
I painted it flat back when i was done.

The factory instructions that come with the kit that I bought showed the harness running along the passenger side next to another harness. The problem is that that harness is not on the passenger side in the SR5 trucks. The connectors for the OEM harness are behind the passenger side footwell kick panel. The OEM harness plugs into the two connectors and then drops down through a hole in the floor under the passenger side floor carpet.

The OEM harness, again that came with my kit, is not nearly long enough to run from the kick panel on the right, across the cab to the driver's side and then back to the tailgate.

The video that TacoTime55 posted is not for the OEM kit, at least not for the 2019 SR5.

OP, I don't know if Toyota changed the wiring harness at all for 2021. From what you say it seems that it is the same, but be sure to look at the drawings and directions carefully.

Here is a link to the factory install directions. http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/PK3B6-34JS0inst.pdf

Thanks for all the replies. Based on what im seeing im wondering if the "Christmas tree zip ties" would be a good option to get these installed. If there are existing holes I can use I can push the Christmas tree end of the zip tie into the hole to hold the wires. I will pick a pack up on Amazon and give it a shot.
